Description

UNITE STATES SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Pate'nt No. 316,315, dated April 21,1885.
Applicaiirn filed May 17, 1884. (No model.) I
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, L. D. WADE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Puyallup,'in the county of Pierce and Territoryof Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of my gate. Fig. 2 is a front view. Fig. '3 is a perspective detail view, and Fig. 4. is also a perspective detail view.
This invention has relation to farm-gates; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the gate-post to which the gateB is connected, and O the opposite latch-post of the gateway.
D D represent posts which are placed on each side of the gateway, said posts being on the same side of the roadway as the post A, and in line or nearly in line therewith.
Between each post D and the post A is located a catch-post, E, which is provided with a catch, a, having a beveled end, b, projecting toward the roadway.
The post 0 is provided with a centrallynotched catch, 0, on its inner face, said catch having the shoulders (I on each side of the notch beveled, as shown.
The gate Bis provided with a pivoted catchbar, F, which engages a spring, G, attached to the gate, whereby it is held down in a yielding manner. When this end of the gate moves toward the post C, its latch rides up on the beveled shoulder d until it reaches the notch of the catch, into which it falls, holding the gate in position. When the catch is down,it rests on abar or support, H, of the gate. When the gate is thrown open, its latch-bar engages theprojecting catch of one of the side posts, E, which serves to hold it in open position.
The gate 13 is provided with a pivot b'ar, K, at the end, which is connected to the post A.
This bar K is extended upward, and is provided on its upper end with a horizontal or nearly horizontal plate, L, which is firmly se c'ured to the upper end of the bar K. The
plate Lis provided with a T-shaped arm, N,
which projects over the upper rail of the gate, the crossbar g of said arm extending transverse] y, as shown. In the ends of the cross-bar g are made perforations h, for the attachment of the cords or chains which connect the pulleys P thereto.
. From the upper surface of the plate Lrises a pin, k, which extends through aslot, Z, in the cap-plate V, which is secured to the gate-post A'and projects over the plate L of-the gate-bar. The front wall of the slot] iscurved in concave form, so that the pin of the plate L will ride therein easily toward the center, or toward either end of the slot.
The lower end of the gate-bar K is provided with a pivot, s, which is seated in a pivot-bearing, t, under the end of said bar. The pivotbearing 15 is arranged nearer the post A than the slot Z of the cap-plate. The depth from front to back of the slotl is sufficient to allow the latch-bar to rise out of the notch of the catch in the gate-post when the gate is pulled toward the rear. I,
The gate-post A is provided with a cross-bar, T, which isseated in a hearing at the upper end of said post, and is firmly secured thereto. The cross-bar extends horizontally parallel to the roadway, or toward the posts I). D. To each end of the bar T is connected a pulley, P.
The outer side posts, D D, are provided at their upper ends with arms R, to which are connected pulleys P.
The gate is geared on each side as follows: On one side an operating-rope, Z, is attached to the pulley-block of the pulley P, whence it passes around a sheave of the double pulley P,
back to the pulley P, around the second sheave of the pulley P, and thence to the pulley P" of the post D on'the opposite side of the gate, its end having a small weight, 10, connected to it to keep the rope taut. The operating-rope ward or toward the post A, releasing the latch, and then to swing the gate :open on the opposite side from that on which the rope is pulled. The latch of the gate engages the projecting catch of the side post when thrown open. The gate having been thus opened, is closed by pulling the rope on the opposite sideywhich raises the gate to free the latch from the catch of the side post, and then swings it into closed position, when the latch engages the catch of the gate-post 0.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1S
1. The combination, with the post A, its capplate, pivot-bearing, and bar T, of thegate B,
having the plate L, constructed as described,
andsecured on the upper end of the pivot-post,
and provided with the upwardly-projecting pivot-pin and the outwardly and horizontally projecting T-shaped arm, the pulleys, and operating-ropes, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the gate B, of theropes, substantially as specified.
pivot-head plate, constructed as described, and provided with the T-arm, the sprjing latch, the 2 latch-posts E E, the outer pulley-posts,D D, the latch-post O, the cap-plate V, and horizontal bar of the gate-post A, the pulleys P P and 1?, arranged as shown, and the operating- 3. The combination, with the gate B, having the pivot-head plate provided with a T-arm, and pivoted at its lower end in abearing below it, of the gate-post A, having the slotted cap-plate extending over the head-plate of the 3 gate, and the transverse bar carrying pulleys at'its ends, the outer side posts,'DD, also carrying pulleys, and the operating-ropes, substantially as specified. I
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in 4 presence of two witnesses.
