UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCE.
. SAMUEL G. WILKERSON, OF OTTAWA, KANSAS.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,058, dated May 5, 1885.
Application filed Aprn 1e, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. WTLKER- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ot-tawa, in the county of Franklin and State l of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this improvement is a gate of simple economical construction and opera tion, that can be made by any person of ordinary mechanical skill, and that can be opened and securely closed by persons on horseback, or in wagons or other vehicles, without descending to the ground for that purpose.
This object is attained by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forniinga part of this specication, in which- Figure lis an elevation showing the gate closed. Fig. 2 is a plan. Fig. 3 is a View with some of the parts removed. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the gate, and shows a modiiied form of iron brackets. Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line x of Fig. 1, and shows the course of the cords or chains. Fig. 6 is a rear view showing the post to which the gate is hung, the gate-operating mechanism, and the rails of the fence in transverse section.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in the several figures of the drawings.
The gate G is swung on doubleacting.
hinges between posts B and A.
At equal distances on each side of post B are placed two uprights or posts, A, which are slotted, and in each of these slots is pivoted a lever, C, the lower end of which is also slotted to receive a trigger, G, which is pivoted therein. The upper end of each of the levers is perforated, and in these perforations are secured cords or chains, r', which pass back of the post B, cross each other in passing under a roller, R', and thence are carried on each side of the post B around rollers B, over bracket-arms W, to staples g, to which they are secured; but if the gate is light in weight and is easy to open, the bracket-arms may be dispensed with, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5.
The triggers O are also perforated to receive cords or chains o', which are secured therein and pass through the slots in post A and'apertures T T in post B, cross each other, straddle the pin S, (forming a part of the hinge,) pass to opposite sides of the sliding bolt or latch H, through an aperture in block h, and are secured to the sliding bolt or latch H at r. This arrangement gives a purchase to the cords or chains r, and will enable any one approaching the gate from either side to unlatch it by taking hold of one of the triggers O and moving it in an upward direction, then by bearing down on one of the levers O the gate is opened, and after the person has passed through, the gate is closed by bearing down on the other lever O.
The'Abracket-arms W give greater leverage power, and are intended to be used on large gates.
The bolt or latch H slides on bearings in the gate-frame H and in the block h, and is provided with a spring which forces it in the direction of the arrow into a recess cut in the post A, into which the bolt or latch H enters to form the fastening ofthe gatewhen closed.
A transverse pin, It', through the latch or bolt H is to enable it to be slid back by hand.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
In a swinging gate, the levers provided with triggers constructed and arranged to operate as specified, in combination with the cords or chains, the rollers, the sliding bolt or latch, and the posts between which the gate is swung, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my sig nature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL G. VILKERSON. Vitnesses.
G. S. VINsoN, TnoMAs WALKER.
