H. F. DUNN.
(No Model.)
GATE.
Patented D60. 8, 1885.
WITNESSES flttorneys N. PETERS, nQw-mm n m, wumgmn. n1;
UNITED STATES HENRY FRANKLING DUNN, OF EAGLE LAKE, TEXAS.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,778, dated December 8, 1885.
Application filed May 17, 1884. Serial No. 131,875. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. F. DUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eagle Lake, in the county of Colorado and State of Texas, have inventedanew and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to gates; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character which shall be cheap and simple in its construction, one that may be easily operated, and yet be positive in its engagement with the latch to prevent it from being opened by cattie, 8w.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a gate constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being shown closed. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken through the latch.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to corresponding parts in the several figures, A represents afence in connection with which my improved gate is preferably used.
B represents posts, to the center one of which is hinged in any preferred or suitable manner the gate 0, to the rear batten, b, of which are attached the hinges or securing means.
D represents an upright or standard which is situated near the forward ends of the crossbars d, which said cross-bars pass through openings therein and extend a short distance beyond the same, so that when the gate is closed the ends of said bars are in close proximity to the fence A. At the upper end of this upright or standard D is provided a-brackct, E, upon which rests a lever or cross-bar, G, having notches e. The said bracket E consists of a strip of wire bent to form a semicircle, and having its ends fitting in a strip, a
H represents an upright, which is secured to the cross-bars d of the gate near the upright D, said upright extending a slight distance above the upper or top cross-bar d of the gate.
I represents aha-r, which is loosely mounted to slide between said bars or uprights D and H, and which is divided or has at its upper ends arms adapted to inclose the central portion of the lever G, to which said arms are pivoted. The bar I is provided at a point between any two of the bars or rails of the gate with a projection, f, which, when the said bar is raised, prevents its upward movement farther than to allow of the disengagement of a roller which it carries at its end from a plate or latch, as will be described. The lower ends of this bar I are recessed or cut away to receive a roller, J, which is loosely mounted to turn therein.
K represents a plate which is adapted to receive said roller when the gate is closed, and is provided with a slot for that purpose. From the sides of the slot 9 the plate gradually slopes or is cut off, forming an incline, upon which the roller is adapted to move when the gate is opened.
K K represent ropes or chains which are secured tothe top bar of the gate, their other ends passing through or over pulleys or rollers which are mounted in the upper ends of the posts located adjacent to the central post to which the gate is hinged, the said ropes or chains being provided at their ends with weights.
The operation is as follows: One end of the bar G is raised, its other end forming a fulcrum and resting on the bracket. As the bar G is raised it removes the roller from the recess of the plate or latch K and allows the gate to be pushed open. The opening of the gate raises one of the weights of the cords K, so that when the gate is released it will be closed by the weight which has been raised by opening the gate.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a gate having uprights or standards secured thereto, of a bar carrying a roller at its lower end and sliding between said uprights,a latch-plate,and mechanism, substantially as described, for operating the bar and gate.
2. The combination, with a gate, of uprights or standards secured thereto, a bar carrying a roller at its lower end and sliding between said uprights, and a bracket or latch adapted to receive said roller, as set forth.
3. The combination, with a gate having vertical standards secured thereto, of a bar carrying a roller at its lower end and provided with a projection, f, for limiting its upward movement, a latch adapted to be engaged by said roller, and means for raising said bar and roller, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with a gate having vertical standards secured thereto, of a bar carrying a roller at its lower end sliding between said
