SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,776, dated November 22, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB KURTZ, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Greencastle, in the county of Franklin and State of lPennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gates 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a v out alighting from a vehicle or horseback, all' of which will be hereinafter more fully explained.

The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrates myinvention, in which- Figurelrepresents a side view, part section, of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical cross-sectional view of my improved gate. Fig. 3 represents a det-ail view of the sliding bar attached to part of the gate. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 represent detail views.

The letter A designates the gate, composed of the panels a., having their front ends secured between the vertical strips c', and braced by an inclined bar, a?, that extends from the upper end of said strips to the lower end of the rear post, B, which latter also secure the opposite ends of-said panels. Said post B is provided at its upper end with a pin, b, that engages with and projects through a staple, b', secured to avertically-pivoted bar, b2, attached to a fixed post, C, in the rear of the gate-post B. The latter post is further provided with a pin, b3, on the under side thereof, that en gages a slotted plate, b, secured to the cross-piece b5, and the gate is also provided at this end with a guard, c, that is securely xed thereto.

D designates a bar in rear of the gate and secured to the lower end of the post C, upon which is placed a sliding bar, c', that is provided with a notch, c2, on one side thereof and about the center. Said bar c has secured thereto one end of a cord or chain, c, on either side of the gate,while the other end of said cord or chain passes around the rear ofl the gate-post B, and is secured thereto. On the rear and at the lower end of said post is secured a metal strap, g', over which said cords or chains work in operating said gate.

Iivoted to the post C is the vertical bar b2, above mentioned, the lower end of which has a projection, c3, which engages with the slot c2 onthe sliding bar c. Said vertical bar b2 has at its upper end a projection, d, and pin df, to which a chain, d2, is attached, one end of which is attached to the pin d', and the other end is fastened to the upper part of a locking-latch, d3, that is pivoted near its center to and between the iront vertical strips of the gate. Said latch, when the gate is closed, engages a notch, d4, in a cross-piece, d5, secured to the latchfpost E, thereby locking the gate. The cross-piece d5 extends on either side of the latch-post, and is beveled, as shown, and the latch is provided with a guide-piu, e4, at its lower end to prevent said latch from sidewise movement.

To the ends c e' of the sliding bar c is secured a cord or chain, c2 e2,which passes through staples e3 e3 on the posts F, and upwardly to the short end of an operating hand-lever, f, that is pivoted atf' to the top of the posts F F. Said staples may be provided with suitable pulleys or rollers under which said chains may pass.

that in constructing the gate each panel is somewhat shorter than the other from bottom to top. By this construction the upper portion of the post inclines forwardly, thus allowing the gate, when operated, to rise from engagement with the latch-post.

Having thus given a description of the different parts of which my improved farm-gate is composed, I will now proceed and explain the manner in which it is operated.

In operating the gate to open the samethe hand-lever is pressed downwardly, and being pivoted to the post F will draw the cord or chain c2 and throw the sliding bar c to one side, at the same time carrying therewith the lower end of the pivoted bar b2, and also the chain d2, which movement causes the frontend of the gate to be raised from enga-gement with It will be seen by referring to the drawings IOO the latch-post, and allows the gate to be swung open by the said chain c2, and the pin b3 in the bottom of the post B working in the slot in the plate b4 aforesaid. When it is desired to close the gate the opposite hand-lever is worked in a similar manner after passing through the gateway, and a reverse movement of the parts b2 c e2 closes and latches the gate.

It will be further seen that the peculiar construction of the slot in the plate b, being of V shape, admits of the pin b3 passing from one position to another, thereby causing the gate to swing, when operated, open.

A cord or chain, g, may operate the latch d'3 by being connected to the same and the vertical bar, b2, as shown.

In a farm-gate, the same constructed as described, the pin b and pin b3 secured to the post B, the former workin g in the staple b and the latter in the slotted plate b4, in combination with the sliding bar o', having the slot c2, chains or cords e2 e2 e e, and the pivoted bar b2, having the staple b', projection c3, and cha-in d2, as shown.

2. The combination of the gate A, slotted plate b4, sliding bar c', pivoted bar b2, and handlevers operating said bar e' with the chain d, operating the latch d3, and the cords or chains dZ e2 e2 e e operating the several parts, as shown, described, and for the purpose set forth.
