SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 285,751, dated September Application filed February 17, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA LUSTER Lines, of Forsyth, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1, Sheet 1, is a perspective View of my improvement. Fig. 2, Sheet 2, is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3, Sheet 2, is a front elevation of the upper end of the movable gate-post, the horizontal beam being shown in section through the line a m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4, Sheet 2, is a front elevation of the lower end of the movable gate post, the supportingblock being shown in section.
The object of this invention is to promote convenience in the use of gates.
A represents a gate, of any suitable construction, the rear end of which is hinged to the post B. The post B serves as a hingepost to the main gate A, and as the front end-bar of the supplementary gate 0, which is hinged to the post D. The lower end of the post B rests in the recessed upper end of the block or short post E, where it is secured in place by a pin, F. The upper end of the post B is rabbeted to fit into the correspondingly-rabbeted forward end of the horizontal beam G, where it is secured in place by a bolt, H. The rear end of the beam G is framed to the upper end of the post D, and is strengthened and supported in a horizontal position by an inclined brace, I, framed into the said post and usedalone under ordinary circumstances; but when a gateway wider than usual is required the pin F and bolt H are taken out and the two gates, A O, are swung open together by hand.
J is the forward or latch post, to which is attached the catch K to receive the latch L of the gate. The catch K is made with beveled ends, so that the gate will fasten itself automatically when swung shut in either direction.

To the forward part of the latch L is attached the end of a cord, N, which passes over a pulley, O, pivoted to the upper end of a standard, 1?, attached to the forward part of the gate A. i i
To the cord N, a little in the rear of the pulley O, is attached the end of aseeond cord, Q. The cords N Q pass around pulleys R pivoted to the ends of a horizontal bar, S, and their ends are attached to each otheror to a ring, T, at the center of the horizontal bar S. The bar S is made of alength equal to about twice the length of the gate A, and is attached at its center to the horizontal beam G at or near the forward end of the said beam, and at right angles with the gateway.
To the ring T, or to the adjacent ends of the cords N Q, are tied the ends of two cords, U V, which pass around the pulleys R, or other pulleys, or through guide-eyes WV attached to the ends of the bar S, and to the ends of the said cords U V are attached the upper ends of two bars, X. The bars X should be about four feet long, and are designed to serve as handles in operating'the cords to open and I close the gate.
When a team is to pass through the gateway the driver drives the horses up to thegate A, takes hold of the adjacent handle X and pulls upon it, the effect of which is to first raise the latch L and then swing the gate open.
After the team has passed through the gateway the driver takes hold of the other handle X, and pulls upon it, which swings the gate shut.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, withthe main gate A, and the post D, of the horizontal beam G, the separable post B, and the supplementary gate 0, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby a wider gateway can be had, when required, as set forth.
