GATE.
No. 331,166. Patented'Nov. 24. 1885.
WI TJV ESSES '7 71w Attorney with TATES AMEL SIEGERT, OF GRAYVILLE, ILLINOIS.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,166, dated November 2%, 1885,
Application filed August 10, 1885. Serial No. 173,904. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMEL SIEGERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grayville, in the county of White and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a speeification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to animprovement in farm-gates, its object being to provide a gate that may be operated by a person. in a vehicle or on horseback, and consequently to obviate the necessity of dismounting for that purpose; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following description and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The accompanying drawing shows a perspective view of my improved gate.
In the drawing,A designates two posts, be tween which the gate 13 swings, it being hinged to one, and the other being provided with a catch, 0. This gate may be of any approved form, and'is provided near its forward end with two short vertical bars, D, between which the latch E is pivoted. The latch, being pivoted forward of its center of gravity, has a tendency to drop at the rear end, bringing its forward end to the position shown in the drawing to engage with the catch G, secured on the face of the post A.
F designates two posts, longer than the others, and placed at opposite sides of the hingepost A and in a line therewith. Projecting from the tops of these posts are horizontal arms G, braced by the pieces H. Depending from these arms are swinging rods I, attached to the operating levers J about midway of the length of said levers. The inner ends of these levers are provided with perforations which 40 fit loosely over a rounded continuation, K, of
the brace or cleat L,secured on one side of the gate near its rear end. The end of one of these levers and the rear end of the latch-bar are connected by a cord, 0. The posts F have cleat or brace L, having a coutinuation,K,the 60 posts F, depending rods 1, operating-levers J, and the cord O,connecting the rear end of the latch-bar to the end of one of the operatinglevers, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 65 I presence of two witnesses.
AMEL SIEGERT. YVitnesses:
WILLIAM R. STRAWN, EDWARD GRoME.
This by means of the cord 0 will rue operation
