Description
F. M. NIXON. Gate.
No. 222,561. Patented Dec. 9,1879.
ATTORNEYS MFEI'ERS, mom-unmask, WASHINGTON. o c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
FRANCIS M. NIXON, OF LENA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO GEORGE BREON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,561, dated December 9, 1879; application filed September 26, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
. part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of devices for operating a gate, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my gate. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
A represents an upright post, to which is hinged a-bar, B, of about the same height as the gate.
To the hinged bar B, at top and bottom, are fastened two converging arms, O O, forming a triangular frame.
a a are two slides, fastened one on the bar B and the other at the junction of the arms 0 c, and upon these slides the gate D can move I backward and forward for a suitable distance, and then swing, with the frame B O, on the hinges b b.
To the post A, a suitable distance above the gate, is pivoted a lever, L, which extends on both sides of the gate, and has at each end a handle, H, suspended from it.
To the inner end of the gate is secured a cord, or its equivalent, d, which is passed through a swivel-pulley, e, onthe inner slide,
a, and then connects with one arm of the lever L. A similar cord, d, is attached to the other arm of said lever, and passes down through a swivel-pulley, c, on the post A, and then connects with the lower end of the latch F. This latch is substantially of the form shown in Fig. 2, pivoted at i to the gate, and having its lower end curved upward, with the cord at attached to said curved end. Before the cord 01 reaches the latch it passes through a swivel-pulley, 0 on the gate.
By pulling down on that end of the lever L to which the cord 01 is attached, the other end rises, and the cord 01 first raises the latch 1* from its pin a; in the post P and then moves the gate on the slides a, backward for a cer tain distance, and if the movement. of the lever is continued the gate swings open. By pulling on the other end of the lever L the gate closes in reverse manner.
Having thus fully described m y invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the hinged frame B O and sliding gate D, the lever L, cords d d, pulleys e 6 c and latch 1?, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of August, 1879.
" FRANCIS M. NIXON.
