JOHN FLLNNER, OF MLLLERSBURG, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,825, dated March 5, 1878; application filed December 10, 1877.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FLINNER, of Millersburg, in the county of Holmes and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and Improved Gate; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and complete description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of the same.

Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several views.
The novelty of this invention consists in the peculiar devices for opening the gate, which openin gis effectedbyaplatform-lever attached to a sliding bar, and to which bar the upper rail of the gate is connected by a link, whereby the gate is opened by standing upon a platform.
The construction of the gate and the operation of the same is more fully described and set forth, as follows:
The gate above alluded to consists of two sections, A and B, the one section being substantially the duplicate of the other, thereby making a double gate. G and D are the posts, to which the gates, respectively, are attached by pivoting the rails E in the post at the points a. In the posts are grooves for the admission of the ends of the rails," as seen in Fig. 2 at D. The cap of the post is represented as removed, that the groove may be seen. F are the headposts of the gate, and to which the ends of the rails E are pivoted at b, thereby making a loose or free jointed gate, of which the supporting-posts C and D are the heel-posts.
G, Fig. 1, is a sliding bar,.the ends of which are respectively inserted in the posts, and are free to move vertically therein. The upper rail of each of the gates is attached, respectively, to the ends of the sliding bar by rods or links c, Fig. 1. One rod only is shown. A portion of the posts is represented as broken away, that the rod and its connection to the rail E and the bar may be seen.
To the middle of the bar referred to is hinged at one end a platform, H, Fig. 2, whereas the opposite end rests upon the ground, as shown in Fig. 3. A similar platform is hinged to the opposite side of the bar, thereby making two inclined planes or approaches to the gate, one on each side, as shown in Fig. 3.
Having described the construction and arrangement ofthe gate, the practical operation of the same is as follows:
A person approaching the gate walks up the platform, and by his weight depresses the end thereof hinged to the bar G. As a consequence, the bar goes down with the end of the platform, thereby drawing upon the rod c. This downward pulling of the rod elevates the outer ends of the gates by virtue of its connection to the upper rail E on the outer side of the pivotal point a. Both gates, being actuated at the same time and by the same agency, are elevated together, and drawn back toward the posts so far as to make ample room between them for the person to pass through, which, on being done, and the person stepping from the platform, the gates, by their gravity, close again to the position shown in the drawing.
By the above-described device for opening the gate the hands are not required for that purpose. Hence a person having a load occupying the hands can pass through without stopping to open the gate; also, a person trundling. a wheelbarrow or other similar vehicle need not stop to open the gate, but can pass directly through.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In connection with the jointed gates A and B, pivoted to the posts C and D, the bar G, links c, and platform H, constructed and ar ranged to operate substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
