UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. RHODES, OF CAMERON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HORACE R. BELSHER, OF LEXINGTON, TEXAS.
MEANS FOR OPERATING SWINGING GATES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,193, dated March 22, 1892.
Application filed January 12,1892. Serial No. 417,856. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES W. Rnonns, acitizen of the United States, residing at Cameron, in the county of Milam and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Means for Operating Swinging Gates, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in means for operating swinging gates.
The object of the present invention is to simplify and improve the construction of means for opening and closing swinging gates and to enable the same to be operated by moving the operating-levers in the direction in which the person is going.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a swinging gate provided with operating mechanism constructed in accordance with this invention, the gate being shown open. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the gate closed.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a swinging gate, which is provided at its inner end with a vertical bar 2, having its lower end journal-ed in a suitable bearing and provided at its upper end with an extension 3, loosely arranged in a bearing 4, whereby the gate is adapted to be slightly tilted to lift its latch 5 out of engagement with a keeper 6 of alatch-post7 andakeeper 8 of a supplemental latch-post 9. The upper bearing 4 consists, essentially, of aloop, and the extension 3 is rounded at the bearing and has secured to and coiled around its upper end a chain 10, which has its end secured to parallel levers 11. The levers 11 have their farther ends connected by a wire 12 and are fulcrumed intermediate their ends on a horizontal bar 13 of ahinge post 14. The ends of the levers 11 are connected by wires 15 and 16 with operating-levers 17. The wires 15 are parallel and the Wires 16 are crossed and are diagonally arranged, whereby the levers 17 are moved toward the gate to open the latter and away from the same in closing the gate. The points of attachment of the ends of the chain are beyond the extension and between the same and the horizontal bar, whereby the draft on the chain will tilt the gate and lift the latch. A rope or strap may be employed instead of a chain.
The inner ends of the operating-levers are shaped into handles, so that they may be readily grasped by a person on horseback or in a vehicle, and they are fulcrumed intermediate their ends on posts 18, which are arranged a sufficient distance from the gate to enable the latter in opening and closing to clear a vehicle.
What I claim is- The combination of a hinge-post having a horizontal bar at its upper end and provided with a bearing, a swinging gate provided at its inner end with an extension loosely arranged in said bearing, the parallel levers fulcrumed intermediate their ends on the horizontal bar and having their farther ends connected, a chain or the. like secured to and coiled around the extension of the gate and having its ends secured to the parallel levers at points beyond the said extension, and operating-levers mounted on suitable posts and connected with the ends of the parallel levers, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES W. RHODES.
Witnesses:
