UNITED STATES PATENT vOFFICE.
AMON W. GHILCOTT, OF MATTOON, ILLINOIS.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,646, dated February 20, 1883.
Application filed October 24, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AMON W. OHILOOTT, of Mattoon, in the county of Uoles and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Gate, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to facilitate the opening and closing of a. gate from either side of a fence.
Referenceis to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in hich similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved gate from one side, the gate being shown closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same from the other side, showing the same opened.
The top rail, A, of the gate A is provided in its underedge with a track-groove, into which the edges of rollers B pass, which are journa-led on the standards 0 at one end ofthegateopening and on fence-posts, so that the gate A can'slide longitudinally on the said rollers. As shown, the top rail, A, of the gate extends some distance beyond the inner end of the gate. At the outer end the gate is provided nith tenons or projections D, which passinto mortises or recesses E in the gatepost F. A guide-roller, G, is journaled on clips G, attached to the under side of the top piece, H, of the fence, so that the roller will be above the top rail,'A, ot' the gate. A rectangular elbow-lever. J, is journaled on the top of the fence in such a. manner that one arm will be at each side of the fence. The end of one arm of the lever J is pivoted to the free end of a bar. K, pivoted to the outer end of the gate. To the free end of the other arm two connectingrods, L, are pivoted, which have their upper ends swiveled or pivoted to the inner ends of two separate levers, M, pivoted to the ends of a cross-piece, N, on the standard O, which cross-piece N is at right angles to the gate and fence, and as the levers M are parallel with the cross-piece N they are. thus also at right angles to the gate and fence. A clip, 0, fixed to one side of the gate A, is adapted to receive the connecting-bar K when the gate is closed.
The operation is as follows When the gate is closed, as shown in Fig. 1, the outer ends of the levers M are raised, and one arm of the lever J is in a horizontal position and the other is vertical. If the gate is to be opened,
the outer end of either of the levers M is pulled down, whereby the inner ends of the levers will be raised. The vertical arm of the lever J is swung into the horizontal position. The horizontal arm is swung into the vertical position, thereby drawing the gate A in its length from the post F to the standard 0. It the outer end of either lever M is raised, the above-described movements will be reversed and the gate closed. When the gate is closed the joint of the bar K and the end of the arm of the lever J will be below the pivot-line connecting the pivotal centers of the lever J and the fixed end of the bar K, and thereby a lock will be formed which prevents the gate from being opened. The-roller G prevents the inner end of the gate from rising, and thus prevents the outer end from plowing into the ground, and insures an easy movement of the gate.
Handles may be attached to the ends of th levers M to facilitate lowering the ends of the same. As the levers M project in opposite directions, the gate can be opened from either side of the fence.
I am aware that it is not new to use a gate sliding on and between two rolls arranged upon a supporting-frame; but
What I do claim as new and of my invention is- 1. The combination, with a sliding gate, of a bar, K, pivoted near one end thereof, a clip, 0, on the side of gate, and an elbow-lever, J, having one arm jointed to said rod, and so arranged with reference to the gate and its operating mechanism that the said arm of lever J and the bar K will be in alignment, or nearly so, whenever thegate is closed, and thus lock it securely, as described.
2. The combination, with the gate A, ofthe elbow-lever J, the connectingbar K, the connecting-rods L, and the levers M, pivoted on the cross-piece N of a standard, 0, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. a
3. The combination, with the gate A, of the elbow-lever J, the connecting-rod K, the clip 0, and of levers and connecting-rods for swinging the angle-lever J, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
