w. OLAYPOOL. Farm Ga-te.
No. 215,882. Patented May 27,1879.

WITNESSES lNVENTQR 7 w m' I ATTORNEY N. PETERS. F'NOTO-LITNOGRAPNER. WA$HINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I WALLACE OLAYPOOL, OF NORTH BUFFALO, PENNSYLVANIA.
\ IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,882, dated May 1879; application filed March 18, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALLACE GLAYPOOL, of North Buffalo, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm- Gates, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing a gate with present invention. Fig. 2 shows details,
one in section and one in side elevation, of the In the accompanying drawings, A denotes,
a folding gate, constructed in any usual and ordinary way, and having the usualhorizontal motion on the hinges a, which connect it to the gate-post B. When shut, the gate can be locked or fastened by the spring-latch O, attached to the front post, B, or in any convenient way. The folding or vertical movement of the gate can be obtained by means of the lever D, pivoted or hinged by the swivel E at the top of the gate-post B. p
The inner end of said lever is connected by a strap or link, (I, with the frame of the gate at any convenient point along or near the line of the upper rail. At the other end of the lever is hung any convenient counterbalancingweight F. As thus constructed, when the gate swings horizontally, the lever will take the same motion on its pivot or swivel E, and when it is desired to raise up the gate a very slight force applied at its front end will, when the latch or fastening is loosened, suflice to move it sufficiently to allow passage way through the opening.
The swivel or pivot E, by which the lever D is mounted upon the gate-post B, is composed of bolt 17, which is fixed in the top of the post,
and the cap 6 of the swivel or pivot, which is jointed to the lever and comes down over said bolt, its top resting on the head of the bolt, and thus is formed a durable bearing. This swivel and lever can be made very cheaply, and can be readily applied to this class of gates without any considerable expense or inconvenience, and by the peculiar structure of the swivel a very durable and strong joint or pivot is'secured.
I am aware that a folding gate has heretofore been connected with the top of a gatepost by means of a'swivel pivotally attached to a weighted lever hinged to the gate, said swivel being provided at its lower end with a pin attached to the swivel, which is made to enter a hole made in the top face of the gatepost, and I therefore lay no claim to such invention, which differs from mine in that the socket in my invention is made in the lower end of the metallic swivel, which receives a pin inserted in the. gate-post, whereas the hole or socket in the invention disclaimed is made in the top face of the gate-post, which, being of wood, is liable to wear, causing the gate to sag, and rainwater will from the construction, enter the hole in the top of the face of the post and cause it to rot, which is not the casein my invention, where no hole is made in the face of the post, but in the lower face of the swivel.
Having thus described my invention, what I consider new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv The combination, with the folding gate A, weighted lever D, and pivoted strap d, of the gate-post B, having the pin '5 in its upper end, and swivel E, having a socket in its under face and a universal joint at its upper end, conmeeting it with the weighted lever D, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
