GATE-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,198, dated June 16, 1885. Application filed January 2, 1884. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that GEORGE XV. lVrLLLiMs, of Des Hoines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, did invent certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Hinges, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,
0 in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of agate having my improvement applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the lower hinge and part of the gatepost and gate, the socket-cap being shown in section.
The object of this invention is to provide selfopening gates, simple in construction, strong and durable, and not liable to get out of order or to freeze up in winter.
The invention consists in the lower hinge of a self-opening gate, made with a swinging arm hinged to a plate attached to the gate-post, and carrying a pin working in a socket-cap attached to the lower rear corner of the gate,
so that the gate can be thrown out of plumb by moving thesaid swinging arm.
A represents the rear or hinge-post; B, the front or latch post, and O a gate of any desired 0 construction. To the side of the lower part of the post A is attached a plate, D, to the projecting end of which is hinged an arm, E, in such a manner as to swing horizontally. To the outer end of the arm E is attached a 5 vertical pin, F, projecting above and below the said arm. The upper end of the pin F is made pointed or conical, and tits loosely in a socket formed in a metal cap, G, placed upon and secured to the lower end of the rear 0 end bar of the gate 0. To the lower end of the pin F are attached the ends of the ordinary throw-rods. The other ends of the throwrods are to be attached to a trip-iron. To the upper end of the rear end bar of the gate 0 is attached a cap, J having a lug or short arm projecting over the gate. To the end of the arm of the cap J is attached a pin, K, the lower end of which extends downward, and
is attached to the top bar of the gate 0. The upper end of the pin K is pivoted in the end of a bar, L, the other end of which is attached to the upper part of the post A, so that the upper pivoting-point will be nearer the forward end of the gate 0 than the lower pivoting-point. \Vith this construction, when the trip-iron is operated the throw-rod H pushes the lower rear corner of the gate to one side, which raises the forward end of the gate 0, lifting the latch M above the catch N, and causing the gate to swing open by its own weight. \Vith this construction, also, the gate is plumb when closed and when open, and is both opened and closed by its own weight when thrown out of plumb by the operation of the push-rod H upon the swinging arm E 6 of the lower hinge.
The hinges thus constructed will be strong and durable, will work with very little friction, and will not be liable to get out of order or to be obstructed by snow or ice, so that the gate will work equally well in winter and in summer.
I am aware that the hinge-stile of a gate has been provided with a socketed metal cap to receive a pintle projecting from a fixed bracket, and I am also aware that a link connecting the parts of the hinge attached to the gate and gate-post, respectively, is old, and I therefore do not claim such invention.
Having thus described the invention, what So is claimed as new, and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is
The lower hinge, made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of the plate D, the swinging arm E, the pivot-pin F, and the socket-cap G, as set forth.
EUGENIA A. WILLIAMS, Admiaistratrix of the estate of G. lV. Williams.
\Vitnesses:
J. A. FOWLER, Gno. 1?. 1VIORGAN.
