Be it known that I, .WILLIAM A. PEErLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at VValthall, in the county of Webster and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in portable. gates; and it consistsin the peculiar combination and arrangements of the parts, as more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the gate open. Fig. 2 represents a sectional detail view ofthe lower hinge of the gate and a sectional view of the gate-post and a portion Fig. 3 represents detached perspective views of the two parts of the hinge; and Fig. 4, avertical sectional view of the upper portion of the gate, showing the locking mechanism in elevation.

The letter A indicates the sill of the gate, which is securely fastened in any convenient 'manner to the cross-ties B, which rest upon the ground or other proper foundation.

0 indicates the gate-posts, which are secured to the sill at their lower ends, and which are braced on their four sides by the braces D, so as to be securely held in position. The inner braces serve the double purpose of strengthening the posts in position and protecting them from thewheels of passing vehicles, as their inclined position serves tokeep the vehicles in the gateway and from against the posts.

To prevent unusual wear, the inner braces above mentioned are preferably faced with iron or steel, or other material suitable for the purpose.

The letter E indicates'the gate, which is constructed of a frame of wood or other suitable materal in the ordinary or any approved manner. The said gate is supported on hinges F G, the upper hinge consisting of a wing or eyebolt passing through the gateframe and a pintle passing through the gatepost, and secured thereto by a nut fitting to the threaded end of said bolt. The lower hinge consists of a bifurcated bolt, a, secured pose. The bifurcated ends of the said bolt are recessed, and are adapted to engage a slotted plate, 0, which forms part of the hinge, and which is set and bolted in a recess inthe gate-post by means of a screw-bolt and nut, d, as shown.

The letter H indicates the lock-bolt of the gate. The said bolt passes through a mortise in the gate-frame, and is adapted to enter a mortise in the gate-post, which is beveled at each side, so that the bolt may be automatic in its locking action. The bolt'is pivoted to the lower end of the lever I, which is fulcrumed on the gate-frame at K, and which bolt is pressed normally forward by means of a spring, L, so as to automatically look when the gate is closed.

The letter M indicates a lever, which is fulcrumed to one of the gate-posts. The ends of this lever are bent as indicated, so as to engage one of the pickets of the gate at the top when the gate is opened to either side, and hold it until it is desired to close it. The said lever is at such height, as will be observed, that it can be conveniently operated by a person on horseback, and as it extends to each side of the gate it can be operated from either direction.

The operation of my invention will be ap parent from the above description, and-its advantages are evident, as my gate can be trans ported from place to place, can be readily put up on any foundation, automatically closes and locks, and can be conveniently operated from either side.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with the gate hinged to the gate-post, as described, of the bent lever fulcrumed to the gate-post and extending to each side of the same, whereby the gate may be held in an open position and released from either side to close it, substantially as H. F. BAYS, AARON HUTTO.
