No. 231-;901 Patemed sept. 7, sso.
wTNEsbsEs i ATTORNEYS HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Q PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM' w. eooDwIN, oFcREsToN, IowA.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,907, `dated. September '7, 1880.
Application filed January 14` 1880. i
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, WELLIAM W. GOODWIN, of Oreston, in the county of Union and State of Iowa, haveinvented'certain ew and useful Improvements in Gates 5 and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and eX- act description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of refercncc marked thereon.
Figure l ofthe drawings is a representation of a face View of my gate, and Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective detail views of the same.
This invention I'elates to gates; and it consists in the improved features of construction and combination hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, A designates the rails, and B C the cnd vertical bars, of a gate, the former bar being opposed to the latch-post B', and the latter to the hinge-post O'. The lower hinge of the gate is composed of a pintle, D, upon the bar O, which passes down through an angle-plate, E, secured to the hinge-post.`
The upper hinge consists of an angle-plate, F, having a projecting half or a little more than half circular strap, G, which inclines down toward the gate; also, a plate, H, upo top of the bar C, a pinile, I, rising from said plate and passing through the angle-plate F, and a roller, K, which travels upo the inclined strap, and which is mounted upon a pin which projects from the plate H. This plate H has upon its side opposite to the roller a projecting portion, H', which, when the gate is closed,
extends under the vertical portion of the angle-plate F, and hence effectively prevents the gate from being raised by small stock. When, however, the gate swings round upon its hinges, the projection H' clears the said vertical portion of the angle-plate, and hence leaves the gate free to rise as the roller ascends the inclined strap. The latch is composed of two independent plates, L, bent out and away from each other at their forward end, as at l, and pivoted by a conmon pivot-pin, M, in the bar B of the gate. A portion of these plates is thickened, as at m, so that their ends will be separated to admit the bent rod N between them. The weighted end a of either latcl is raised by reason of its bent and bevelcd end striking against the catch-rod N.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'In combination with a self-closing gate, the hinge comprising the angle-plate F, inclined and curved strap G, pintle I, roller K, and the plate H, secured upon the vertical bar C of the gate, and having a projection, H', which extends under the vertical portion of the angleplate when the gate is closed, and thus prevents its being raised until swung round, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses. i
WILLIAM W. GOODWIN.
