Description

mit
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
DAVID N. MINOR, OF BRIDGEWATER, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVED FASTENING FOR BARN-DOORS.
Spccication forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,248, dated October 30, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID N. MINOR, of Bridgewater, Washtenaw county, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barn-Door Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac-v companying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an inside view ot' a double barndoor with my improved fastenings attached. Fig. 2 isa vertical section of the same, taken through the line x rv, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view, taken through the line a" w', Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section, taken through the line z z, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view, taken through the line y y, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish a convenient, durable, and secure fastening for barn and other similar doors; and it consists, first, in the combination of two iron catches with the doors and with the standard or swinging bar of the doors; second, the combination of a spring with the door and swinging bar; third, in the combination of a guide or rubiron with the standard and with the top sill of the door-frame 5 fourth, in the combination of three catches with the swinging bar or standard ofthe door; ttth,in the combination of the sliding bar, hooks, and clasps with each other, with the door, and with catches upon which the hooks catch.
A are the side posts, and B and C the upper and lower sills of the door. D and E are the doors, which a-re constructed and hinged to the side posts in the ordinary manner. F is the standard or swinging arm, which is pivoted to the central arm d1 of the door by a bolt passing through the said standard and arm in the ordinary manner. To the upper and lower arms, d2 and d3, of the door D are attached iron catches (is and H, the recess in the catch Gr being deep enough to allow the standard F to swing so :t'ar back as to free the ends of the said standard from thefcatches or notches by which they are held.
I is a coiled-wire spring, one end of which is attached to the door D and the other end to the upper end of the standard F. By this spring the standard is brought back to a vertical position whenever it may have been turned aside in opening and closing the door. To the standard F are attached three catches,
J, to receive the hooks that hold the door E -f closed. To the arms el e2 e3 of the door E are y attached clasps K, through which passes and' in which slides thefbar L. a To this bar are attached three hooks, M, one or more of which are made ot' such a form that they will strike upon the catches J and raise the slide L. The slide L is raised from the outside of the door by means of the arln N, projecting through a slot formed through the door E, as shown in Fig.
O is a guide or rub-iron attached to the upper sill, B, of the door-frame for the upper end of the standard F to strike against, and be vguided into such a position as to pass into the notches formed in the upper and lower sills of the door-frame.
By this construction of the door-fastenings the upper, lower, and central parts of the door are supported, guarding the door from warping; and if left open and blown shut by the wind the doors will fasten themselves, thus preserving them from injury by slamming.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent- 1. The combination ot the spring I with the door D and with the standard F, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth,
2. The combination ofthe guide O with the sill B of the door-frame and with the standard E, substantially as described, andl for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the three catches J with the standard F, substantially as described, and for the purpose set fort-h.
4. The combination of the sliding bar L, clasps K, and hooks M, with each other, with the door E, and with the catches J, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
DAVID N. MINOR. Witnesses NEwcoMB BROWN, JAMES BENHAM.
