SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,861, dated December 24, 1889.

Application filed April 16, 1889. Serial No. 307,459. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ARTHUR IV. EDWARDS, of Shingle Springs, county of El Dorado, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Gates and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the same.

My invention relates to that class of gates in which the gate is mounted, by means of suitable rollers, upon a tilting track, whereby it opens and closes by gravity, according to the direction in which the track is tilted or inclined; and my invention consists in the construction and combination of devices which I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim. a Y

Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my gate. Fig. 2 is a detailof the vertically-movable rod H.

A is the roadway, on one side of which is located the post B, and on the other side of which is located the two part or slotted guide-post 0. Beyond this is a fixed post D, between which and the guide-post O is a part of the fence represented by E.

F is the gate, adapted to open and close the roadway by sliding through the slotted or two-part guide-post O, and against either the post B or the post D, according as the gate is closed or opened.

The standards f of the gate are provided with carrying-rollersf, and these are mounted upon the track G, whereby the gate is Wholly suspended from said track. This track consists of a suitable bar or rod and is pivoted at g in the central or guide post C, so that it may be tilted to an inclination in one direction or the other. The track is bent at the center, so that when one end of it is raised to an inclination the other end is dropped to a horizontal plane, its movement being limited by the bases of the sockets b and din the posts B and D, in which the track ends play.

In the gate-post B is mounted a verticallymovable rod H, the upper end of which is at tached to the tilting track. This rod has (BX- the lever I and pulls it down, thereby raising the end of the tilting track and throwing the other end of the track to a horizontal position. The gate thereupon unlatches itself and rolls down the inclined end of the track onto the horizontal end and there remains. After he has passed through the traveler seizes the handle of the other lever I on the other side, and by pushing it up reverses the tilting track, so that the gate rolls back to a closed position. If the traveler be in a vehicle or on horseback, he can readily operate the gate Without alighting.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The sliding gate having the end standards and rollers, the end posts B and D and central guide-post C", in combination with the track upon which the rollers are mounted, said track being pivoted to the guide-post O and centrally bent, whereby as one end rises to an inclination the other end drops'to a horizontal, the vertically-movable rod mounted in the post B and having outwardly-extending side pins, the pivoted levers, and the links connecting the levers with the pins of the rod, whereby said rod is moved and the track tilted, substantially as described.
