SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,747, dated November 16, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that LOHARLEs M. LANE, acitizen of the United States, residing at Olathe, in the county of Johnson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in gates, and especially to sliding gates which are mounted on tilting tracks pivoted to gate-posts, the inner ends of the tracks being pivoted together and adapted to be raised and lowered by suitable leveroperating means, whereby the gates may be opened or closed accordinglyas the tracks are tilted in one direction or another.

To these ends and to such others to which the invention may pertain the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout both views, in which- Figure 1 is a sideelevation, partly in perspective, of my improved gate closed, a double gate being shown. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing gates open.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the gateposts between which the gates slide, these gate-posts having at the top a cross-piece B, carrying a cross-bar O, to-which are pivoted links 0, and pivoted to said links are the operating-levers E, one on each side of the gate, and each lever E has pivoted to its end an opcrating-handle E. Vertically mounted in an aperture in the cross-piece B and theblock B is a member G, which has secured near its lower end the inner ends of the levers E, whereby the said member may be worked vertically when it is desired to open or close the gates are pulleys K, which are designed to travel on the inclined tracks.

When it is desired to open the gates, the operator pulls down the lever E, which causes the member G to be raised up and with it the inner ends of the inclined tracks, and when raised to its upper limit, the tracks being inclined outward, the gates will roll down the inclined tracks outward and be thrown back between the posts, suitable antifriction-pulleys A being provided which are carried on the posts A, and the inclined tracks which are pivoted together will be raised up to such a height as to offer no obstruction to objects assin throu h the ate-o enin as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

When it is desired to close the gate, the operator pushes up the handle-bar, which gives a reverse movement to the member G, causing the inner inclined ends of the track to be lowered into substantially a horizontal position, the inclined portions H giving impetus to the gates to roll down the inclined track and come together. To adjust the inclined tracks, the member G, which supports the inner ends of the tracks, may be raised or lowered by means of the pin G engaging in the various apertures in said member.

It will be noted from the drawings forming a part of this application that the gates when either closed or open will be, owing to the peculiar construction of my invention, in substantially horizontal positions. If preferred, suitable latches automatically operated may be employed, which will release as the levers are actuated.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In asliding gate, the combination with the posts A and cross-piece B, and the inclined tracks pivoted to said posts, the inner ends of the tracks being pivoted together and to a link by a common pivotal pin, of the post G pivoted at its lower end to said link, its upper end being guided in registering apertures in the cross-piece B, a strip B, and the adjusting-pin G, designed to engage in an adjusting-aperture in member G, the bar 0 and yokes C, pivoted at their upper bifurcated ends to the ends of said bar, the operatinglevers E, fulcrumed on pivotal pins carried at the lower split ends of said yokes, the inner ends of said levers E being connected to the member G, and the pulleys K mounted at the upper ends of stiles M and designed to [5 travel on said tracks, all substantially as shown and described.
