UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIP DYER, OF UNADILLA, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO \VILLIAM ABERNETHY, OF MOORETOIVN, ONTARIO, CANADA.
FARM-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,891, dated December 4, 1888.
Application filed January 10, 1888. Serial No. 260,294. (No model.)'
To all whom it may concern.-
act by its own gravity the cross-head will bind Be it known that I, PHILIP DYER, a citizen 1 the county of Livingstone and State of Michil gan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being i had therein to the accompanying drawings.
useful improvements in farm-gates.
The invention has for its object to 'make the gate vertically adjustable and to hold and operate it in its adjusted positions.
To this end the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of the parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved gate as in its closed position. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line .00 0c in Fig. 1.
post, B is the latch-post, and C is the gate, 1
which may be of any of the known and ordinary constructions, except as hereinafter described.
D and E are the uprights of the gate-frame, and F is a heel-post, which is hinged as in the ordinary manner of hingin g gates to the gatepost A, and to which the gate is secured in the following manner:
G is a strap secured to the lower end of the upright E and passing loosely around the heel-post F.
H are guides secured near the upper end of the upright F to guide the upper end of the gate vertically.
I is a gravity-binder pivotally secured by the pin J in the heel-post, which, projecting through a slot, K, in the upright E of the gate-frame, has its free end secured to a rope or chain, L, which passes over a sheave, M, on the gate. This binder is provided at its free end with a cross-head or cross-pin, N, so arranged that by pulling upon the rope sufficiently to lift the binder to a horizontal position the gate is free to be raised or lowered vertically, while if the binder is allowed to against the upright E, and thereby firmly lock the gate in its adjusted position.
By extending the slot K in the upright E in a vertical direction between the top and bottom rails of the gate it will be seen that the gate may be allowed to drop clear to the ground, or be raised to any desired height This invention relates to certain new and above to permit the passage of stock underneath, or to swing free from the ground; and to permit unobstructed play for the free ends of the binder I preferably construct the gate with a vertical slot, 0, as shown in the drawings,
The peculiar construction of the gate shown in the drawings I also claim my invention, but do not describe and claim it in this application, as I have made it the subject-matter of a separate application, patented June 26, 1888, as No. 385,302.
In the accompanying drawings, which form I apart of this specification, A is the hinge- It will be seen that my gate can be opened or closed from either side, and is adapted to swing either way, which forms an advantage greatly appreciated by the farmer.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. In a farm-gate, the combination, with the hinge-post, of a heel-post hinged thereto, a binder, I, pivotally secured to the heel-post and projecting through a slot, K, in the upright of the gate-frame, the cross-head M, secured to the free end of said binder, the sheave M, rope L, and slot 0 in the gateframe, all combined to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
2. Ina farm-gate, the combination of the hinge-post A, heel-post F, hinged thereto, the
vertiCally-sliding gate, the guide-strap G, the guides H, the binder I, and cross-head N on the free end of said binder, all combined and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 1st day of December, 1887.
PHILIP DYER.
