THOMAS B. THORN, OF VINCENNES, INDIANA.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,760, dated March 1, 1887. Application filed July '22, 1886. Serial No. 208,735. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS B. THORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Viir cennes, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of my invention, and is a perspective view of the same, showing the gate closed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing gate open.
My invention relates to farm-gates of that class which are designed to be opened and closed by a person on horseback or in a vehicle without being compelled to dismount if on horseback, orwithouthaving to alight if seated in a vehicle.
The invention is designed as an improvement upon the gate patented to me January 19,1886,No. 334,7 27 and it consists in the con strnction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, -A and B designate the end posts, to which the mechanism for supporting and opening and closing the gate is attached.
For conveniencein describing the construction and operation of the gate I will denominate the longer supporting-post, A, the rear post, and the shorter post, B, the front post. The shorter front post, B, is slotted vertically from the surface of the ground up to within a short distance of its top, as shown at B, and
the rear post, A, is provided near its upper end with a shorter slot, 0, of awidth equal to the width of the slot B in the front post, B, and at its lower end the slot 0 is connected with a short narrow slot, D, which extends downwardly a short distance below the lower end of the slot 0.
In the upper end of the slot B of the front post, 13, is pivoted the long shifting-lever E, which extends to a distance a little greater than the width of the gate 13 beyond the front post, 13, the rear end of said shiftinglever E being the heavier end and extending a short distance beyond the outer face of the rear post, A. A double-inclined iron rod, G, having upturned ends H H, is securely bolted to the lower face of the shiftinglever E, near each end of the shifting'lever E, through the media of said upturned ends, and when the gate F is closed the rod G (near its rear end) rests in the short narrow slot D before mentioned.
The gate F is provided at its ends with vertical upwardly extending hangers I, which also form the end battens of the gate. In their upper ends the hangers I I are provided between the strips of which they are formed with pulleys J J, which run on the track formed by the double-inclined rod G when the shifting-lever E is tilted either to open or to close the gate.
The longer rear end post, A, is provided in its outer face, near its upper end, with a laterally-extending cross-bar, K, which is let into a recess, K, in said outer face, and is securely bolted to place. Near its outer ends, on its rear or outer face, this cross-bar K is provided with two levers, L L, which are connected at their inner or weight ends by twisted bars M M with the projecting end of the shifting-lever E. At their outer ends the levers L L are provided with swinging draw wires, chains, or ropes N N, which latter are provided at their lower ends with rings P, which serve as hand-pieces by which to grasp the rods to operate the'shifting-lever to open and close the gate.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination, with the verticallyslotted front post and the vertically-slotted rear post, withthe narrow slot at the lower end of its main slot, and the shifting lever with its rear end of an increased thickness pivoted in the slot of the front post and provided with the double-inclined track-rod, of the gate supported on the track-rod by hangers having pulleys in their upper ends, and the cross-bar provided with the pivoted levers, connected at their weighted ends to the shifting-lever by pivoted twisted bars and provided at their outer ends with depending draw-rods,snbstantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS E. THORN.
