IMPROVEMENT 1N GATES.
fitte flgehule referrer tu it tten maar ndert mit mating aart nf the stmt TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, H. HUNT, of Delavan, in the county of Walworth, in the State of Wisconsin, have invented A an Improved Gate; and I do hereby 'declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of-this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my gate.
Figure 2 a plan view of the same, with the cap removed vto give a clear understandingrof its construction.
Figure 3, a perspective representation ofthe pulleys over which the cords operating the gate are made to work.'
The nature of my invention relates to that'class of gates designed more especially for carriage-ways, and for other purposes, where it is desirable for the driver to open and shut the gate without dismounting; and its nature consists in supporting the gate on a compound inclined plane, by means of common friction-rollers, whcrebyit may more readily incline to open or shut, as thecase may require, and in the use-of a series of upright and horizontal pulleys, over' which cords are made to pass and sustain Weights for balancing the gate, and assisting in controlling'it when 'in use.
In order to give a correct understanding of my invention, I have marked corresponding parts with similar letters, and willnow give a detaileddescription. u
. A I Drepresent the gate-posts, set in the ground orl otherwise, in the usual' manner, for the support of' gate L, figs. 1 and 2; thev postsI I being set such a distance apart as is suitable for'said gate to pass between them when being opened and shut. A compound inclined plane, F E, is secured to posts I D A, and arranged to give motion to gate L, and control its force, by means of a curve, Z, made on the outer end ofthe post E, as
seen at ig. 1. This curve, Z, is very important in preventing the gate from having too great a concussion against post D, and is therefore considered new and useful. The inclined planes F E, of themselves, are not considered new, they having been used before, but are used simply to maketlie gate operate.
An important part of my invention consists in arranging the pulleys J K, and fitting them to operate on aA bracket, H, attached to the posts I I, and a cap, c. By means of thisarrangement the pulleys are made to rest on an ornament and brace, which can be readily detached for the pur-poses `of transportation and repairs. The posts B, having arms, S, are set such a distance from gate L as is most convenient for a person sitting in a car riage to pull down on Weights X. Two ropes, m in, are attached to a draught-cord, n, and made to pass between .I K, and then over pulleys r r, made to run on arms S, figs. 1 and 2, by which means the gate is moved. The draught-cordal is made fast to the stiles of gate L at O P, andv is drawn tightlyaround said stiles for the purpose of applying the power for moving the gate directly against the opposite sidel to that course or direction the gate is being moved. This arrangement I consider important, as it strengthens thc gate and prevents it from being drawn apart by use. i
Having thus fully described my device, I do not claim a gate hung on inclined planes, nor made to run i Y thereon; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The arrangement and combination of pulleys J K, attached to bracketv H, with cords @and m m, used for operating gate L, on planes F E, the latter having a curve, Z, substantially as set forth.
' II. HUNT.
