IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.

Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,403, dated July 25, 1871.

To all who/mit may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT GDDLEY, of Moores Mill, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Gates; and do hereby declare the following to be a i'ull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accomp-anyin g drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention has for its object to combine with an ordinary farm-gate an arrangement of devices that will enable it to be readily adjusted and securely held in an inclined position; and the nature of my invention7 hence, consists in the construction and arrangement oi" certain devices, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construct-ion and operation, referring to the annexed drawing' which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a front view of the gate, showing the same locked in a horizontal position. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the gate locked in an is an end view, showing the inner end of the gate.

H H represent the gate-posts resting upon sills I I, and connected at their lower ends by a bar or cross-sill, J. The gate is constructed in the ordinary manner of horizontal slats K K and nprights and braces L L, as shown. To one of the gateposts H is hinged, by hinges S S, an upright post, G at the lower end of which is secured a wooden piece, P, ofthe same thickness as the gate. To

this piece B is pivoted the bar A by means of a pin, F, the upper end of said bar A being pivoted, by a pin, E, to a sliding bar, B, inserted between the two upper slats oi' the gate. To the upper end of the hinged post G is attached a bracket or guide, O, for holding the gate upright when unfastened. D is a pin which holds the sliding bar B and keeps the bars A and B to their places. The gate moves freely between the post G on one side and bracket O and bar A on the other, the bars A and B moving independent of the gate and raising the same up when .moved back to the center. rlhe post G is then swung around on its hinges to open the gate. Upon the other gatepost H is attached the follo wing device: A series of horizontal bars N N is secured to a brace and two upright bars, M M, and securely held to the post H by means of a bolt or pin,I It, but so arranged as to turn on said pin and bring either ends of the bars N N inward. The bolt or pin It is so arranged as to change the relative height ofthe bars N N from the ground as either side is turned up. Thus the gate may be closed either in a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. l, or in an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 2, the outer ends of the gate-slats K K being in both cases inserted between the lockin g-bars N N. This gate may be latched by any suitable means.

. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
