Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOEC MONTGOMERY LOOIWIIS, OF LIBERTY CENTRE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,434, dated December 9,1873; application filed October 25, 1873.
To all whom t may concerny Be it known that I, MONTGOMERY LooMrs, Ot' Liberty Centre, in the county of Henry and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Valuable Improvement in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l ofthe drawings is a representation of my gate when shut. Fig. 2 is a view of my gate when Open. Fig. 3 is a sectional View of my gate. l
This invention relates to gates which can be opened and shut by sliding them endwise and it consists in pivoted seltadjusting braces or props which will support such gates in a horizontal position while they are being opened and when they are open', thereby preventing them from saggingand dragging on the ground, as will be hereinafter explained.
The following is a description of my improvement:
In the annexed drawings, A A represent two posts, to one of which a gate, B, is connected by hinges b b and a swinging bar, G. The gate B is composed of horizontal rails connected to vertical bars. and strengthened by diagonal braces e e. The lower rail B of the gate has a channel or groove init from one end to the other, which channel terminates in openings g. The swinging bar G receives through it the gate B, and allows this gate to be moved endwise in opening and shutting it, and, as the bar G is allowed to swing halt' around either end of the gate, can be fastened, by catches a. a, to the post A. C O are two braces, which are connected by pivots to a block, D, applied between the two upper rails ot' the gate. The upper ends of these braces O C are beveled for the purpose of abutting against the sides oi' the vertical bar G, when their lower ends rest O11 the bottom ofthe channel in the rail B. The block I) is rigidly tixed to the bar G and allows the gate to be freely moved endwise.
When the gate is shut, as shown in full lines, Fig. l, one of the braces C will stand in a verl tical position, which it is allowed to assume by its lower end passing down through 011e ofthe openings g. When the gate is opened, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. l, the two braces will assume the inclined positions represented, and hold the gate horizontally.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The braces O O, pivoted to a block, I), on which the gate slides, in combination with the channeled gate-rail B and openin gs g', substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
MONTGOMERY LOOMIS. XYitnesses C. C. YOUNG, W. II. RrcnAnDsoN.
