Description

PATENTED APR. 7, 1908.
0. A. JOHNSON. I GATE HINGE. AYPLIUATION FILED AUG. 20, 1907.
OHARLEY A. JOHNSON, OF NOEL, MISSOURI.
GATE-HINGE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 7, 1908.
Application filed. August 20, 1907. Serial No. 389,383.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEY A. Johnson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Noel, in the county of McDonald and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in self closing swinging gates, and comprises means whereby the same is allowed to swing in either direction and, by the peculiar construction of the hinge connection between the gate and post is caused to close automatically.
The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrange ments of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the acconi panying drawings, in which2- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my gate open. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view through the post and hinged end of the same, showin the peculiar hinged connection between flie lower portion of the gate and post, and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the hinged con.- nection.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a post and B a gate having an end post B.
C designates a hook fastened to the post and D is a bolt having an eye D which engages over said hook, which forms a hinge for the upper portion of the gate. Said bolt passes through the angled plates G, and G designates a bur or nut mounted upon said bolt whereby the eye of the bolt may be let out or drawn near the hinged end of the gate.
E designates a bar forming a portion of the lower hinge of the gate, said bar having eyes E at its end, in one of which the angled end F of the rod F is pivoted, said angled ends being held in place by means of a nut F mounted on the threaded end thereof. The other end of the rod F is angled and is pivotally connected to an eye N formed at one end of the bar N and a nut O is mounted upon the threaded angled end which passes through said eye N. Said bar N is held to the rear edges of the gate posts B by means of a bolt Q and has a second eye J for the reception of an angled end R of the rod R, which end B is threaded and has a nut S fitted thereto. The other end of the rod R is also angled as at R and passes through an eye E upon the bar E and is held in place bya nut T mounted upon its threaded end. M
In operation, it will be noted that the ate is allowed to swing in either direction an in swinging, the forward end of the gate is tilted up and the whole gate when swung open is disposed in an inclined plane and, belng so mounted, the gate will swing closed by gravity assuming an upright or vertical position.
What I claim to be new is A gate hinge comprising, in combination with a stationary post, a hinged plate fastened thereto and projecting beyond the opposite edges of the gate, the ends of said plate turned in eyes, a gate, a hinged plate-fixed thereto of shorter length than the plate upon said post, rods having right angled ends, each rod engaging an eye in the plate upon the post, and the other upon said gate, nuts upon the angled ends of said rods, the angled ends of one rod projecting in the opposlte direction from the angled ends of the other rod, said rods being so arranged that the hinged plate, upon the rear of the gate will be in alinement with the side face of the post, when the gate is open, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLEY A. JOHNSON.
WVitnesses:
GEORGE A. THOMPSON, N. GARVIN.
