Description

@Intim tat-es gementy @ffies Letters VIi'utemf No'. 77,956, dated May 19, 1868,
IMPEDVEMENT IN GATES.
@la ,Schwulen referto te in these ttttrs Quant annum-tinggart nf `tige .salut To ALL WHoM 1E MAYV ooNoEEN: l.
Be it known that we, JOHNP. BUT'z and bBNFE Mcli's'nmno, of Enterprise, in the county `ot Switzerland, and in the Stat-e of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iu Gates; and'dohereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters oi reference marked thereon, making a pnrtfof this specification.
Figure 1 represents this gate fastened,and at rest.
Figure 2 represents this gate elevated, and'rendy to swing open.
A and B represent the front and rear gato-posts respectively. v 1 t This gate is composed of a series of horizontal slats, aja a a a. The trop one, reaching :only part of the length 'of the gate, is pivoteduteach end to the vertical pieces b b', forming the-front and rear cross-bars of the gate. p C represents a'diagonal brace, i'linnng from vfrontend ot' -the bottom slat a to the end of lever D, to which it is pivoted. l
4E represents another diagonal brace, running from the'junction of. the lower slt, a, and the cross-barb', to near the end of and supporting the upper slat, a', 'to which the lever`D is also pivoted.
Attached to the brace ,C is the tongue or latch e, which fastens the g'ate near the top, atnz.
y representslthe ratchet-bar, which is designed to hold the lever at any dcsird"angle.
By bringing down the upper end of lever toward the front gate-post, A, it raises the front end of the gate by means of its action on brace C, and withdraws the tonfnie or latch c from the groove at z, and also forms the balance of slat a.
Having thus fully described our invention, whatwe claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The lover D, with the brace C, and the slats a a', `used as and furthe purposes set forth 2. The combination of the lever D with the brace C,'and the latch c, and ratchet-bar g, as and for the p urposes specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing, we have hereunto set our hands, this 20th day of November, 1867.
