Letters Patent No. 82,668, dated September 29, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-GATES.

'ro ALL WHoM 1r MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, THOMAS B. WIGKHAM, of Granville, county of Licking, State of Ohio, have invented a. new and useful Improvement upon Farm-Gates 'and I do hereby declare that the followin'gis a full and exact description thereof, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the lettersof reference marked thereon. v
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a sliding gate, so arranged that it can be held either open or closed, without the use of latches or buttons, a gate that can be manufactured at a small expense, and when properly adjusted cannot sag down in either direction. i
The letters A B C respectively Vrepresent the three posts of my gate, of which the post A is slotted, as shown'on Figure 2, and it has also a small brace at its bottom, marked a, adjustedas thereon shown.
The post B has attached to it a trundle, b, and a clutch, c, each adjusted iu the manner and at the points represented.
The post C is mortisel out at the point d, and the guide-Slat D is fastened therein, as represented.
This guide-Slat connects the posts B and C midway, or thereabouts, between `the tops and bottoms ofthe same. The end of this slat fastened to post C is bevelled upward, as shown, for the purpose of giving aid in holding the'gate'securely open, when it is desirable so to do.
My gate proper is marked E on the drawings. It is made in the usual form of sliding gates, except that its middle slat is extended beyond the others, and constitutes' an arm, marked g. This arm has a trundle-head attached thereto, markedf, and a trundle, h. l
My gate isoperated as follows, namely:
To close it, the operator slides it on the trundle b. The front end vpasses up the brace a, into the slatted post A. The gate now rests principally on said brace, and there is no need of latch or button to hold it shut.
To open the gate, I slide it backward, until the trundle L passes upward-.on the bevelled end of guide-Slat D. The weight of. the gateisnow in great part transferred to the trundle 7L, which passes beyond said bevel, and holds the gate securely open, n y
The clutch c, Varm y, the two trundles and guide-Slat, arranged and combined in the manner shown, serve to keep the gate inline, and render permanent sagging in either direction almost impossible.
What l cl'aim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A farm-gate, having posts A, B, and C, brace a, clutch c, trundles b and h, gate E, arm g, and guide-slat D,
THe. B. WIcKHAM.
