IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: f
Be it' known that we, JOB GOFF and \V. B. GOFF, of Hornellsville, in the county of Steuben, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Gates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, reference beingjha d to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawingg making part of this specification, A A represents the gate, which is made in any of the knowuand usual Ways. B B represent the gate-posts, which are also made in any of the known ways, having their lower ends buried in the ground. To one of the posts B are secured the two portions of a hinge, r av, being simply two pieces of metal sharpened at one end, so that they can be driven into the post, and at their outer ends provided with an eye or opening to receive a pin, I. J represents a metallic loop secured to one of the slats of the gate insuch a position that when the pin passes through the eyes of the pieces a: a: it hlso passes through this loop. To the other gate-post B is secured an ordinary latch-catch, a, being simply a piece of wood or metal inserted in the post, with a shoulder near its outer end, against which one of the slats of the gate catches. This latch-bar is inserted into the post diagonally to the gat'e, as seen. Above the latch bar is a pin, d, which is inserted in aproper opening in the post made to receive it. In a sill at the bottom of this gate-post B another pin, e, which stands in a vertical position and close to the gate.
It will be seen that this gate, so connected to its posts, can be opened at either end. By drawing out the pin I the gate will swing upon the latch-bar a. The pin 01, being immediately over the slat that rests upon the latch-bar, prevents the gate from coming off of said bar. The pin a, at the bottom of the gate, prevents the gate from leaving the post at its lower side, but allows it to swing out at right angles with the post. By leaving the pin I in its position in the hinge, the pins (Z and 2 can be removed, the gate raised off of the latch-bar, and it can then be swung open on its hinge. This gate cannot, when shut, be raised out of its position by hogs or .eattle; and when it is desired to open 'it in case of deep snow, it (being made light) can be easily lifted over the snow.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The arrangement of the metal eys a: 2', pin 1, and loop J, with the gate A, in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 11th day of January, 1867 JOB GOFF,
W. B. GOFF.
