JAMES F. SMITH, OF GEORGETOWN, ILLINOIS.
IM PROVEMENT IN FARM-GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,185, dated September 30, 1879; application filed April 12, 1879.
.To all whom it may concern:
. in g had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my gate in its lowest position on the post, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view with the gate elevated on the post.
Identical parts in the drawings are designated and referred to by the same letters.
My invention relates to farm-gates and it consists in the manner of raising and lowering the gate for the separation of stock and to avoid snow; also, in the manner of opening and closing the gate, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
A is the gate, provided with the square-eyed hinges B, the bell-crank latch C, and a series of holes, a, in the vertical center bar of the gate.
D is a square post, which passes freely through the eyes of the hinges, and is attached to the fence-post or gate-postproper, E, by the eye-hinges c. This post D is provided with horizontal arms d d and d, to which the cord F is attached for opening and closing the gate. The arm d is connected by a chain, which may be shortened at will, to the rod G, which actuates the latch O.
H is a brace extending from the post D, and provided with a hook, which enters one of the series of holes a. I is a movable catch.
The operation of my gate is as follows: In case of snow drifting, or a desire to separate small from large farm-stock, raise the gate to any desired height by means of the hooked brace H, the square-eyed hinges B sliding freely upon the post D. By pulling upon the cord F the arm d raises the latch, and the gate swings open against the stop-post h. The catch I can be set in the post E at any rcqnired place to secure the gate in a closed position.
What I claim is In a farm gate, the combination of the square post D, provided with the arms d d and d, chain and latch-rod G, a gate provided with square-eyed hinges B, and the brace H, constructed and operating together substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES F. SMITH.
