; n. PETERS. Ph v v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SYLVANUS M. GILLETT, OE HOMER, NEW YORK.
IM PROVEMEN'T IN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,873, dated September 12, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYLVANUS M. GILLETT, of Homer, in the countyof Oortlandand State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A A represent the two posts of the gate, and B represents the gate. This gate is made of slats put together in two series. One series lie at one angle, the other series at another angle, as shown in the drawings, the slats of each series being secured aboutat'oot apartthe one frointhe other, or any other required or desirable distance. These two series of slats are pivoted to each other at their points of intersection, so that the gate may be pressed together or drawn out at pleasure. This gate does not necessarily open as usual with the ordinary gate, but folds back by the pressing of the slats together. D represents a rod, which has permanent or stationary bearings at each end, in one of the posts said rod being made to pass through the loops 0 e c, which loops are secured fast to the slats of the gate, as shown. When the gate shuts or opens the relative positions of the loops change with the slats. it the lower loop remains stationary the two above it slide up upon the rod when the gate shuts up, and slide down upon it when the gate is extended.
1* represents a bar, which is hinged at its center or near it, and which is pivoted to the gate at its ends. One end of this bar forms a latch and catches, when desired, in an opening in one of the gate-posts made to receive it. The operator opens or shuts the gate by taking hold of this bar, either raising or lowering its center.
It will readily be seen that this gate may be used to shut up, as described, or it may be made to swing upon its hinges, as is the case with the ordinary gate.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is not the employment of slats of 'a gate so arranged as to fold or close together; but
The use of the jointed bar F in combination with the slats c 0, so formed as to make a folding gate, as and for the purpose specified.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
SYLVANUS M. GILLETT.
