LIQLSQS,
ELZA RHODY, OF FABMLANLD, INDIANA.
GATE-HINGE.
Application filed September 8, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELZA Ri-IODY, 'a citizen of the United States, residing at Farmland, in the county of Randolph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has for its object to provide an improved and novelform of hinge and lock and construct the same in such manner that it may be employed on either end of the gate and used as either a hinge or lock, as the occasion may require, owing to the direction in which it is desired to swing the gate and the .end on which the gate is to swing.
With the above and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which: 7
Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved form of gate in closed position with one of the hinge and lock rods partially raised. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the gate locked in closed position. Fig. 3 is a fragmental detail longitudinal vertical section on the plane of line of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a vertical transverse section on the plane of line etl of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a fragmental detail vertical section on the plane of line 55 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly-to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 designates a gate which may be formed of longitudinal and transverse or horizontal and vertical crossed members, as shown in Fig. 1, with the transverse or vertical members extending upon either side of the longitudinal or horizontal members, or may be constructed in any other suitable and well known manner.
Extending transversely through each end of the gate 1, between the transverse or vertical members thereof, are the threaded Specification of Letters Patent.

shanks 5 of the upper and lower hinge members which are retained in adjusted position by the nuts 6 threaded upon the same through opposite sides of the end transverse or vertical members 3 of the gate 1. The outer enlarged and flattened ends or heads 7 of the gate hinge members are provided with central apertures 8 registering with the central vertical apertures 9 of the outer enlarged and flattened ends or heads 10 of the gate post upper and lower hinge members, the threaded shanks 11 of which are extended transversely through the stationary gate post 12 adjacent the upper and lower ends thereof and have the nuts 13 threaded thereon to'opposite sides of said stationary gate post 12 to secure the gate post hinge members in adjusted position. It will be understood that the central apertures 8 and 9 register only which the gate hinge members are carried is in closed position, and when the apertures 8 and 9 register, they are adapted to receive the downwardly directed free ends of the right angled hinge and lock arms 14, the horizontalarms of which are slidably and adj ustably mounted upon the vertical hinge and latch rod 15 and adapted to be secured in adjusted position upon the same by set screws 16, or the like.
It will be understood that the lower right angled hinge and latch arms 14 have longer depending arms than the upper right angled hinge and latch arms in order that the points thereof may enter the apertures 8 of the lower gate hinge and latch members before the points of the upper right angled hinge and latch arms 1 1 enter the apertures 8 of the upper gate hinge and latch members, thereby making it easily assembled.
It will further be understood that the hinge and latch rods 15 are slidably engaged through apertures 17 provided in the gate post hinge and latch members and in the heads 10 thereof adjacent their connection with the shanks 11 of said gate post hinge and latch members, and it will further be understood that the upper ends of the hinge and latch rods 15 are turned to provide the loops 18 by means of which said rods may I be readily raised and lowered, while the lower ends of said hinge and latch rods 15 are slidably engaged through guide openings 19 in the sills 20 beneath the gate 1 and upon the opposite ends of which are secured the gate posts 12.
when the gate end by are extended, in order that the gate may swing upon the remaining hinge or latch rod right angled arms 14 in the direction desired. As the gate swings to closed position, movement of the gate is limited by the latch pins or stop pins 23 in the remaining side of the head 10 of the first mentioned gate post hinge or latch members. It will be evident that the latch pins or stop pins 23 in either side of the head 10 may be removed to permit the gate to swing in the desired direction. It will also be understood that if desired one of the latch pins or stop pins 23 for each head 10 may be removed from its recess and engaged in the transverse opening 24: in the free depending end of the right angled hinge or latch arm 14:
extended through said head 10, it being un- V derstood that the opening 24 is below the head 10 when the right angled hinge or latch arm 14 is in normal position. It will'further be apparent that when the pin 23 is engaged through the opening 24:, it will be impossible to raise the hinge or' latchrod 15 by which the arm 141 is carried. It will also be understood that all of the latch or stop pins 23 are connected to the free ends of cords 25 or chains or other flexible members which have their opposite ends secured to the post 12 in any suitable manner, thereby eliminating danger of losing the pins 23 when removed from their recesses 20 in the head 10.
Copies of this patent may be obtained at While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and illustrated, it will be understood that minor, changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made within'the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
What is claimed isi 1. A gate hinge comprising the combination with a post and hinge members pro.
jectinglaterally therefrom, of a gate hinge members projecting from the ends of the gate and adapted to seat onthe upper face of the post hinge members, a rod engaged through said post hinge members, hinge arms adjustably mounted on said rod and having depending portions engaged to the first and second mentioned hinge members.
2. A gate hinge comprising the combination with a post and hinge members projecting laterally therefrom, of a gate, hinge members projecting fromjthe ends of the gate and adapted to seat on the upper'face or" the post hinge'members, airod, engaged through said post hinge members, hinge arms mounted on said rods; and having depending portions engagedthroughthe first and second' mentloned hmge members and means" for holding the second mentioned hinge' members against movement upon the first mentioned hinge members. 7
In testimony whereof I afiix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
