GATE HINGE. No. 323,622.v Patented Jan. 5, 1886.
NA PETERS. PhnmLxlhogr-.xphnn waihingmn. 114 c.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADAM MILLER GARMAN, OF SINKING CREK, VIRGINIA.
GATE-HINGE` SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333.622, dated January 5, 1886.
Application led April 13, 1885. Serial No. 162,149. (No model.)
To all whoml it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM MILLER GAEMAN, Sinking Creek, Craig county, Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Gate-Hinge;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a side view of a gate to which my hinge is applied. Fig. 2 is also a sideview of the same, but showing the gate in its raised position. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan View taken on the line :n :v in Fig. 1.
My invention relates to hinges for gates; and it consists in the detailed construction and combination ofthe parts hereinafter described in that class of gates in which the gate has a vertical movement with relation to the gateposts on which it is hung without interfering with its swinging motion.
In the accompanying drawings similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A is a gate, which may be made of any convenient form and material, and provided with a latch for securing it to the gate-post a.
B are straps firmly secured to the end batten, a', ofthe gate, and connecting it to'a separate vertical rail, C, made longer than the height ofthe gate, upon which the said straps are free to slide. The rail Gis provided with pivots c at the top and bottom, which turn in the sockets d, attached to the gate-post D; or the said rail is otherwise attached to it by hinges, so that the rail C, together with the gate A, may be free to turn in either direction.
E are a series of holes in the rail C, and e is 4o apin, which may be placed in any one ofthem,
so as to support the gate A at any desired height above the ground.
In addition to the series of holes E and pin e, I form a series ot' notches, F, upon the rail C, on the front side, below the center, and notches F upon the rear side, above the center, with which notches the top and bottom straps can engage and support the gate at any desired height, and I thus use both the series of notches F F and the pin ein combination for supporting the gate.
A gate constructed as above described is cheap to construct and very convenient for separating stock or to hoist over a snow-drift. The hinges and long vertical rail can be attached to gates of almost any construction which swing back and forth.
I ain aware that gates have been heretofore rendered vertically adjustable by means of a long bar hinged to the gate-post and notched on its lower front edge; two sliding gate straps were mounted on this bar and connected with the gate; a wedge was used in the lower gatestrap to hold the same in connection with the notched edge of the long bar; also, that a long bar has been provided with apertures and pins for elevating the gate; also, that two short bars have beenhinged, one above the other, to the gate-post; one of these bars was notched for a sliding gate-strap to engage; but this required double the number of hinges and gate-straps.
I do not claim the above constructions as of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The gatepost having the sockets d, in comeV bination with the gate provided with the upper and lower slotted straps, B, the bar C, longer than the gate, provided at its ends with pivots c c, Working in the sockets d, and having notches F on its forward edge, below the center, and notches F on its rear edge, above the center,'and holes E along its length, and pins e, passed through the holes, the straps B encompassing the bar C above the pins e, so as to rest on and be supported thereby, the rear walls of the slot in the upper strap engaging the upper rear hatches, F', and the front wall of the slot in the lower strap engaging the lower forward notches, F, as set forth.
