Description
a. HEEGLER. anging Doors.
N0.134,542. Pate ed Jan. 7, 1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIG.
GODFREY HEEGLER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HANGINGDOORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,542, dated January 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GODFREY HEEGLER, of San Francisco,in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented an Improved Door and Method of Hanging; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide an improvement in doors; and its nature is to so construct the leaves, either for a single or double door, that it will be possible to open the door from either side, serving as the hinge or pivot about which the door turns, and thus dispensing with the ordinary or butt hinge. This is effected by making the pins which extend from the top and bottom of the door at either side, and are operated by springs which tend to keep the pins projected; In order to retract the pins of either side so as to open the door the knob operates a pinion which moves the pins by means of two racks, one upon either side of thepinion.
Referring to .the drawing for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of a pair of doors, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of one door.
A is a door-casing, and B B are two doors of my construction. Each of these doors is provided with a pair of pins, 0, at each side, as shown, two pins projecting from the top,
and two from the bottom. These pins have corresponding sockets in the sill and top casing, into which they enter when the door is closed, and thus retain it. The pins continue into the door, and are formed into racks I), which pass one on each side of a pinion, E. This pinion is fitted upon the square shaft which carries a knob, F, at each end 5 and by means of the knob the pinion and racks are operated so as to withdraw the pins 0.
If it is desired to open the doors from the center, in double doors, the center knob will be turned; but if for any reason it is neces sary to open the door from the side the side knob will be turned, and the open pins will then remain in their sockets, and thus act as pivots, about which the door will turn.
By this arrangement I am enabled to construct doors which are convenient and may be easily removed, if necessary.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the pins 0, the racks D, pinion E, and the operating knobs F, when constructed substantially as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
GODFREY HEEGLER. [L. s.]
