1- Claim.
This, invention relates to a hinge lock, and
more particularly to a combination lock and releasable hinge.
A. primary object of this invention is the provision of a hinge means including a locking feature, particularly adapted for use on doors, such as the doors of airplanes, motor vehicles, and the like, provided with means whereby the hinge may be readily disconnected with a minimum of effort and difficulty when it is desired to open that portion of the door associated with the hinge.
A further object of the invention is the provision of such a lock, which, when in locked position, may readily serve as a hinge when the opposite side of the door is unlocked or unhinged.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of such a device which is sturdy and durable in construction, reliable and eflicient in operation, and relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture and assemble.
Still other objects reside in the combinations of elements, arrangements of parts and features of construction, all as will be more fully pointed out hereinafter and shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein there is disclosed a pre ferred embodiment of this inventive concept.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front plan view of one form of hinge assembly comprising elements of the instant invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the construction shown in Figure 1, certain concealed portions thereof being indicated in dotted lines.
Figure 3 is a front elevational view, partially broken away, showing one of the elements of the hinge construction.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 4-4 of Figure 3, as viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 5 is a front plan view of the other element of the hinge construction.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 6--6 of Figure 5, as viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 7 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line !---'l of Figure 6, as viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Having reference now to the drawings, the de vice of the instant invention is comprised of a female portion generally indicated at H), including a plate I 1 provided with screw holes [2, or the like, and a semi-cylindrical pocket [3, having side flanges or end walls [4 on opposite sides thereof, the flanges [4 being of circular construction, and provided at their centers with apertures or bores I 5", and are ri'gidly'interconnected by an arcuate wall 4?! upon corresponding peripheral portions thereof; One-half of the pocket It is open, and is: adapted to receive the opposite male hinge member generally indicated at It in a position to be partly enveloped by arcuate wall 4|.
The member I 6 includes a plate ll, provided with bolt holes l8, and a barrel l9 dimensioned to fit within the pocket l3. The barrel 1!] is hollow, as best shown in Figures 6 and '7, and a removable base plate 20 secured in position in any desired manner, as by rivets or screws 2!, is provided to permit access to the interior of the barrel.
The ends of the barrel are apertured, as at 25, and through the apertures 25 slidable cylindrical bolt members 26 extend. Each bolt member 26 is provided on its inner side with a flange 21, adapted to preclude extension of the bolt mem-- bers completely out of the barrel l9, and each has pivotally secured within a recess therein, as by means of a pivot '29, one end of a link 39. The opposite end of each link 30 is slotted, as at 3|, within which slot 3| is positioned a pin 32, the pins being secured to a plate member 33. The plate member 33 is generally quadrangular in configuration, in the form of a parallelogram, adjacent parallel sides being juxtaposed to the collars 21 of the bolt members 26. The plate 33 is provided with a rectangular aperture adapted to accommodate a square portion 35 of a shaft 36, having one end journaled in a cup 31 positioned within the barrel, and the other end extending through a sleeve 38 comprising a portion of the base plate 20, exteriorly of the plate, and terminating in a handle 39. The handle 39 may be provided, if desired, with a keyhole 4D, and contain any appropriate locking mechanism for precluding rotation thereof.
From the foregoing the operation of the device should now be readily understandable. With the parts in the positions shown in Figures 5 and 7, and the bolts 26 extended, it will readily be seen that when the flanges H and H are secured to oppositely disposed articles, the entire assembly will serve as a hinge. Conversely, when the handle is rotated in such manner as to rotate the plate 33, the links 30, through the pin connections 29 and 32, will serve to withdraw the bolt members 26, whereupon the member l6 may be readily removed from the barrel l3 of the member Ill, thus permitting disassembly of the parts in a simple and expeditious manner.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided a device which accomplishes all the objects of this invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
In a hinge, a female hinge member including a hollow cylinder having closed ends, said cyl-.
inder having a portion of its peripheral wall cut away to provide an opening, a male hinge member including a hollow barrel insertable and withdrawable through the opening in said cylinder, a bolt supported in each of :the ends of said barrel and mounted for extensile and retractile movement with respect to the latter, there said cylinder in aligned relation with respect to each other for receiving said bolts, said apertures being in aligned relation'with respect to the adjacent one of said bolts when said barrel .being a pair of apertures in the closed end of 20 is inserted through the opening in said cylinder, and means interposed between said bolts and operatively connected thereto for effecting the extensile and retractile movement of said bolts, said last named means including a plate positioned within said barrel longitudinally thereof and mounted for rocking movement about a transverse axis, links pivotally mounted adjacent the ends of said plate and operatively connected to the adjacent ends of said bolts, and means operatively connected to said plate for ,efiecting the rocking movement of the latter.
