Description

@einen faire @anni @High esoneraz M. D. PoMERoY, or ATTICA, INDIANA. Letters Patent No. 64,140 dated Aprz'l23, 1867.
IMPROVED GATE-LATCH.
@tige dgehult referrer -tu in tigen-@sitas ntmt mit linking nm nf tigt smut.'
'ro ALL WHOM Ir MAY coNcERNe Be it known that I, GEORGE M. D. P OMEROY, of Attica, in the county of Fountain, and State of Indiana, have invented a newnnd useful improvement-in Latches for Gates; and I/do herebydeclare that' the following is a full, clear, and cx act description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, made part of this speciiication, in which the latch is represented in perspective parts, being represented as broken away to show the internal structure, and the changes vin position being represented in red lines.
It is intended that for ordinary cases the catch, which consists of a pin, A, with suitable lugs for receiving the screws by which it is secured, shall be fastened to the gate, while the latch is attached to 'the gate-post. This arrangement may, however, be reversed if desired, though the former has advantages that will be explained hereinafter. B is a plate intended to be attached to the gate-post bywood screws. It is made open behind, with two sidesl and a front which has a longitudinal slot for receiving the stem of the T-formed projection C on the back of the latch C, the wings of the projection C resting against the back of the front part of the plate B. The latch C, shaped substantially-as represented in the form of the letter D, is attached by the projection C', as described, and it slides freely up and down in the slot in the plate Bf This slot extends to the top of the projecting portion of the plate B, at the line marked X. Thisenables the latch to be attached to the` plate by passing the stem of the -r-formed projection into the slot; this done, it is secured by the plate D, which is riveted or otherwise secured to the plate B, so as to prevent the escape of the' latch. The latch being secured to the gate-post, and the pin A to the gate, as the pin swings against the curved lower side of the latch it is raised, permitting the pin to pass, when it falls by its own weight, securing the gate, the pin resting against the perpendicular back of the latch, and as the pinrests against the hase of the projecting portion of the plate B, it will be impossible to raise the gate, thus perfectly preventing the gate from being opened except by hand.
Having fully explained the construction and-operation of my improved gate-latch, what Iclaim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A gate-latch consisting of the parts B, C, and D, constructed and arranged for use as described, acting in combination with the pin A, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
G. M. D. POMEROY.
