E. R. MCKIYNNEY, OF LACON, ILLINOIS.'
Letters Patent No. 64,239, dated April 30, 1867.
GATES.
@te Stigthulc rentra in in tiges gleiten: Entert ma mating part nf tige tame.
TO WHOM' IT MAY CONCERN:
l Be it known that I, E. R. McKINNEY, of' Lacon, Marshall county, and State of Illinois, have invented an improvement in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a fu'll and exact description thereof', refer ence being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 represents a front view of gate when closed.
Figure Zrepresents end view when open.
Figure 3 represents front view when fully opened. Figure 4 represents the arrangement of the rods and lever on top bar connecting with latch for opening or closing.
The nature of my invention consists in so arranging and constructing the different parts of the gate that it may be opened or closed by a horsemen Without disinounting, or allow the passage of a vehicle Without the necessity of the driver leavinghis seat.
In appearance and mode of construction, (as to hinges, bars, &c.,)- this gate will not vary much from those in ordinary use except-in the height of the hinge post A, and the bar B, with its pendants C C and rods r r.
Attached to post A will be the bar B extending above the gate and parallel to the road. To each lend of this bar will be attached, by hooks and rings s, the pendants C C, of such length they may be readily seized by any person ridingand desirous of opening the gate. Toward the lower end of' these pendants the' rods r 1' will extend to the top bar of the gate, Where they will connect with the lever L attached to latch ol' gate P by means of rods t t. This lever L is so arranged 'that moving ori-its fulcrumf the motion of either rod 7' will depress one end of lever, and by connecting-rods t depress the one end'of latch P, (which has its fulcrum at 0,) and elevate the other, thus opening the gate at will. By the use of the pendant C it can be closed with same facility.l Between the second bar and latch is the ,spring .'L to, insure fastening the gate when closed by drop ping the latch into a slot or mortise, R, made to receive it.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The arrangement and combination of the cross-bar B'near the top of hin'ge post, with its pendants C,
and rods r T, connecting with the lever L 0n the top bar of `the gate, also device of lever L, with rods t t confneeting with latch, as herein described.
