Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY LAST, OF WEST LEBANON, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATE-HINGES.
To all whom it mayiconcem:
Be it known that I, HENRY LAST, of West Lebanon, Warren county, State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Double- J ointed Gate-Hinge; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specitication, in which- Figure 1 is a side view ot' the post to which the gate is hinged, the gate being opened from the observer. Fig. 2 is an inside view ot' the post to which the gate is hinged, the gate being open to the right. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken through the line x w, Fig. 2. Fig. 4L is a detail sectional View taken through the line y y, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a top View ot the upper connecting-bar. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of the saine. Fig. 7 is a top view ot the part ol" the hinge that is attached to the gate. Fig. 8 is a side view ofthe same. Fig. 9 is a side View of the part of the hinge that is attached to the post. Fig. 10 is a top view of the lower connecting-bar- Fig-11 is a side view of the same.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its Object to furnish a double-jointed gate-hinge by means of which the gate can be opened in either direction, and which will not readily get out of place; and it consists of a hinge constructed as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the post to which the gate is hinged, which is constructed and set in the ground in the ordinary way.
B is the gate, about the construction of which there is nothing new.
C is the upper hinge, which is made and attached in the ordinary manner, as seen in Figs. l and 2.
D is my improved hinge, which I will now descrioe: This hinge is composed of four distinct pieces, one of which, d', is attached to the post A, another, d2, is attached to the gate B, and the two others, cl3 and d4, are bars connecting the parts d' and d2. The piece d is attached to the post A with screws or bolts in the ordinary manner, and is made in the form represented in Fig. 9, having an car at one end and an eye at the other end, as shown. The piece d2 is attached to the gat-e with screws or bolts, in the ordinary manner, and is made in the form represented in Figs. 7 and S-that is, its ends project at an angle from the central part that is attached to the gate, as shown in Figs. 3 and 7, and it has an ear at one end and an eye at the other, as seen in Fig. 8.
It will be observed that when the pieces d and d2 are attached to their places the ear of each is opposite the eye ot' the other, but at ditt'erent levels, so that the two ears may both be in the same horizontal plane, and also the two eyes.
The upper connecting-bar, d3, is made with an eye at each end, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. This bar d3 is put upon the ears of the pieces d and d2, connecting the said pieces together, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The lower connecting-bar, d4, is formed with an ear at each end, as shown in Figs. 10 and l1. These ears are placed in the eyes ot' t-he pieces d! and d2, connecting the said pieces together, as shown in Figs. l, 3, and 4.
By this construction the parts ot' the hinge D are held firmly together without any liability of getting out of place in whatsoever position the gate may be placed.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved double-jointed gate-hinge, constructed and arranged substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY LAST.
