GATE-HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1915.
0 Application flied October 10, 1914. Serial No. 886,061.
To all whom it ma concern Be it known t at I, MILFORD RIDDLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomfield, in county of Greene and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in gate hinges, and the object is to provide means for fastening the hinge to a gate whereby the hinge will be held immovable after dismantling the gate.
The invention relates to still other novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Fi ure 1 is a view in side elevation, showing t e invention applied to a gate; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view.
A represents the inner or rear post of a. gate, which is preferably made in sections 1, 1, having rai s fastened therebetween. A hinge B, provided with a bifurcated end 2, has an end of one of the rails received in said bifurcation. Vertical slot-s or recesses 3. 3 are formed on each side of the hinge, at
the bifurcated end, in which recesses the,
sections of the posts are received, the posts being fastened to the rails by means of nails 4, 4 whereby the hin e is securely fastened against movement. he other terminal of the hinge is, as shown in the drawings, provided with an opening 5, in which a pin or hook of the hinge G is received.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a hinge which when placed in position, is incapable of removal and which can be applied to a ate when constructed, and thereby maintain the hinge always in position, and overcoming the obj ection of fastening the hinge to the gate by means of screws, nails, and the like, which are constantly becoming loose, and allowing the hinge to permit of the sagging of the gate.
With a hinge of this character, the gate will always be held in a ri 'd position, as the hinge will not become oose or disconnected exce t by the deterioration or dismantling o the gate.
I claim:
The combination with a gate having a sectional post and rails connected thereto, of a hinge provided with a bifurcated end forming two horizontal arms, said arms engaging the upper and lower edges of the rail received therebetween, vertical recesses formed in the sides of the arms in which the sections of the post are received.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
MILFORD RIDDLE.
Witnesses:
Jon F. DE Moss. Vrc'mam Henson.
