NiTED STATES PATENT ()FFIcE.
. GYRUS'WALKER, OF INDIANOLA, IOWA.
FARM-GATE.
EtPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,048, dated May 5, 1885.
Application filed August 18, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OYRUs WALKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Indianola, in the county Warren and State of Iowa, have invented an Improvement in Farm-Gates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of gates that are designed to slide, and also to swing horizontally, relatively to the fixed gate-posts; and my object is to reduce the cost of construction and improve the operation.
My improvement consists in the construction and combination of a roller-bearer having an integral guard with a post, a roller, and a gate, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 of my accompanying drawings is a perspective View of my roller-bearer and guard adapted to be fixed to a post. Fig. 2 is a side View of the post, showing my bearer and guard and a roller attached, and a section of the gate in position as required to lift and detach the gate or swing it out of a roadway. Fig. 3 shows the same parts in position as required to slide a gate to open and closea roadway. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a complete gate.
Jointly considered, these figures clearly illustrate the construction, application, and operation of my complete invention.
A represents the shank of my roller-bearer, adapted to be fixed in and to a post by driving it into the wood, by boring a hole through the post and projecting the shank through and then placing a nut on its end, or in any suitable way.
B is a vertical extension and roller-guard at the front end of the shank A.
O isa lateral extension at the top of the roller-guard B, adapted to support the rail of a gate when it is swung from the roller and brought into a right-angled position therewith, as shown in Fig. 2.
D is a vertical extension from the end of the horizontal portion G, adapted to retain the rail of a gate and to hold the complete gate perpendicular.
F is a horizontal extension from the top of the part D, adapted to prevent the gate from being lifted relatively to the post when the gate is closed.
The complete device may be made of wrought-iron or cast metal and vary in size as desired.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my device and the function of each part thereof, the practical operation and utility of my complete invention will be readily understood by persons familiar with the class of gates to which it is applicable.
I am aware that rollers and guards have been combined with gates; but my manner of forming a guard integral with 'a roller-bearing is novel and greatly advantageous in that the parts having separate functions can be jointly applied to a post to facilitate the construction and operation of a gate.
I claim as my invention- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a combined roller-bearer and guard for farm-gates, consisting of a straight bar, A, having a vertical extension, B, a horizontal and right-angled extension, 0, at the top of the part B, a vertical extension, D, at the end of the part 0, and a horizontal extension, F, at the top of the part D, substantially as shown and described.
2. The roller-bearer and guard consisting
