UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM H. DILL, OF BUFFALO, INDIANA.
ADJUSTABLE GAI'E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,937, dated July 19, 1887.
Application filed March 9, 1887.
To all whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, 'TILLIAM H. DILL, a. citizen of the United States, and a resident of Buffalo, in the county of IVhite and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of side elevation of a gate. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with gate raised. Fig. 3 is a detail view of half-hinge rail. Fig. 4 is a detail view.
My invention relates to adjustable gates; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the hinge-post, and B the latch-post or stop-post.
O D designate two vertical parallel rails, which have ablocl ,E,interposed between their upper ends, a block, F, interposed between theirlower ends, and a block, G, interposed be tween them intermediately of said upper and lower blocks, to form the spaces H I between said vertical parallel rails. The lower block, F, and the intermediate block, G, are provided with rearwardly-projecting eyes or half-hinges J K, which engage the upper pintle, L, and the lower'pintle, M, when the gate is hung in place. In order to prevent the vertical parallel rails O D from being accidentally lifted from place, a bent rod, N, is secured in the hinge-post A just above the lower pintle, M, and is adapted to be turned up out of the way when it may be desirable or necessary to re move the vertical parallel hinge-rails.
P designates the gate-frame, which may be of any ordinary construction, having parallel end battens, Q It, between which one of the rails projects into the space H. Between the upper ends of the battens Q R the front end of a headed arm, T, is pivoted by a bolt, U,
Serial No. 230,259. thlodel.)
the head of said arm T bearing against the rear edges of the vertical parallel hinge-rails O D, and working in the space I when the gate-frame is adj usted vertically. This headed arm T is the upper guide-piece in adjusting the gate.
The projecting end of the rail S is provided with two bolt-holes made laterally through it, one for the reception of the bolt V, which is seated in either one of the aligned bolt-holes IV made transversely through the vertical parallel rails O D, and the other for the reception of a guide-pin, X.
By removing the bolt V the gate-frame may be adjusted vertically, should it be in the lower position, to raise it to permit small stock to pass under it when closed, or to swing over snow when the ground is covered with snow, or, should it have been previously elevated, to lower it to exclude small stock.
By the employment of the vertical parallel rails O D a swinging gate already constructed may be easily changed to adapt it to operate in connection with the rails O D.
In their inner faces near their lower ends, and at intervals for some distance above their lower ends, the vertical rails O D are pro vided with several pairs of downwardly and rearwardly inclined spur-seats a, which are designed to receive spurs b b projecting rearwardly from the rear faces of the rear battens, Q B, said spurs and seats being designed to assist in holding the gate to its vertical adj ustment.
The object of pivoting the arm Tis to permit the disengagement of the spurs b from their seats when adjustment of the gatc-fran1e is to be made.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination of the hinge-post provided with pintles and the gateframe provided with the projecting rail having a trans verse bolt-hole, the perforated vertical parallel hingerails having the spaces H I and the half-hinges, the headed arm passed through the space H and pivoted between the upper ends of the rear end battens of the gate-frame,
and the adj Listing-bolt in the perforated ver- In testimony whereof Iafifix my signatnrein tical hinge-rails, substantially as specified. presence of two witnesses.

5 spur-seats in the front faces of the rails, of V 4 the gate-frame provided with the projecting spur for said seats on its parallel perforated hinge-rails, substantially as specified.
