SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,082, dated April 14, 1896.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. KINOAID, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moberly, in the county of Randolph and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in gates.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of swinging gates,
and to provide a simple and inexpensive one which will be capable of opening in either direction and in which the strain will be taken from the hinges and the gate prevented from sagging.
A further object of the invention is to provide a swinging gate which may be raised and lowered to enable it to swing clear of obstructions, such as snow-drifts and the like, and to provide convenient means of separating stock.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a gate constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on line so as of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the rear pulley. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view illustrating the front pulleys or sheaves.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
l designates a gate composed of horizontal rails and vertical end bars connecting the rails and provided at opposite sides with inclined or diagonally-disposed braces 3, extending from the top of the gate, at the rear thereof, to the center of the front portion; but the gate may be of any other preferred construction.
The gate is provided at its back with horizontally-disposed eyes 4, arranged on vertical portions of substantially rectangular staples or frames 5, having shanks passed through perforations of a hinge post or support 6 and secured to the same by nuts or the like. The vertical portions of the staples or frames 5 form pintles, which are oifset from the support or post 6 and which form, with the eyes terminals connected (No model.)
4., hinges for the gate. These hinges permit the gate to be raised orlowered, as will be readily apparent, to enable the gate to swing clear of obstructions, such as snow-drifts or the like, and to provide means for separating small animals.
The gate is maintained at the desired elevation and is prevented from sagging by a cable 7, constructed of wire and extending downward and forward from the top of the upright or support 6 to the front of the gate, passing under a rear pulley 8 and around front pulleys or sheaves 9, and having its to an adjusting-lever 10. The cable is composed of two sides or portions, being doubled at its center and linked into a hook 11 of the post or support 6, and the cable is disposed at each side of the gate and provided at its terminals with hooks 12, engaging perforations of the sides of the lever The rear pulley 8 is journaled in a rectangular frame or stirrup 13, having its sides embracing the gate and pivoted to the same at the upper ends of the inclined braces 3, and the stirrup or frame inclines upward and forward, the roller 8 being arranged between the sides of the frame and provided with pairs of grooves for the reception of the sides of the cable. The hook 1-1 is provided at the end of its shank with an eye and is linked into an eyebolt 14, which has its shank passing through a perforation of the post or support 6 and threaded for the reception of a nut.
The lever is constructed of a single piece of metal, which is bent centrally to form two sides, and the latter are outwardly ofiset in.- termediate of their ends, as shown in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings, to receive the inclined braces 3, to which the lever is fulcrumed by a bolt 15. The upper portion of the lever is narrow and receives the top rail of the gate, and the lower portion receives the braces 3, as before stated. The sides of the lever 10 are provided at their lower ends with perforations to be engaged by the hooks 12 of the cable, and a transverse pulley 16 is journaled between the sides of the lever, and is located below the inclined braces 3 at a point between the fulcrum-bolt and the points of attachment of the wire cable.
The sheaves or pulleys 9 are located at opterminals of the posite sides of the front of the gate, the pivoting-bolt passing through the inclined braces and the adjacent horizontal rail, and the sides of the cable pass beneath the rear pulley 8, the intermediate pulley 16, which is provided with a pair of grooves, and the front pulleys 9, and extend over and in front of the latter, and thence pass rearwardly to the sides of the lever 10, crossing the lower portion at a point between the front pulleys and the adjusting or operating lever. This arrangement sup ports the gate and relieves the hinges of strain and prevents the gate from sagging.
The lever 10 is secured at any desired adj ustment by a fastening device 18, and when the latter is withdrawn the upper portion of the lever 10 is adapted to be swung forward to raise the gate and rearward to lower the same. A series of perforations 19 are provided at the center of the top rail of the gate, and any one of the perforations is adapted to receive the fastening device 18, which abuts against the rear edges of the sides of the lever to lock the latter against rearward movement.
The gate may be provided with latch mechanism of any desired construction, and an upwardly-extending outwardly-bowed resilient latch-bar 20 is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and is mounted on the front edge of the gate and is arranged to engage a keeper 21 of a latch-post 22.
It will be seen that the gate is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that it is arranged to swing in either direction, and that it is capable of vertical adjustment to enable it to swing clear of obstructions and for other purposes. It will also be apparent that the means employed for retaining the gate at the desired vertical adj ustment also relieve the hinges of strain and prevent the gate from sagging and that they may be readily manipulated to change the adjustment of the gate.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What I claim isi and forward the-gate and connected with the latter at that point, and passing rearward to the lever and upper portion of 1 opposite sides of 1. The combination of a post, a verticallyadj'ustable swinging gate, a substantially vertically-disposed adjusting-leverfulcrumed on the gate and arranged at the upper portion thereof, and a cable attached to said post at a point above the gate and extending downward therefrom to the gate and connected with and supporting the same at the top and back thereof, said cable extending downward under the lever to the front of secured thereto, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a post provided at its top with a fastening device, a swinging gate provided at opposite sides of its front portion with pulleys, a frame or stirrup pivoted to the rear portion of the gate and located at the top thereof and provided with a pulley, an adj usting-lever fulcrumed on the gate and provided with sides embracing the upper port-ion thereof, and a cable composed of two sides or portions and connected with the said fastening device and passing under the front and rear pulleys and located at opposite sides of the gate, and secured to the sides of the lever, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a post, provided at its top with a hook, a vertically-adjustable gate hinged to the post and provided at its front and rear with pulleys, an adjusting-lever provided with sides and fulcrumed on the the gate and receiving the same, and provided at the lower ends of its sides with openings, an intermediate pulley located between the sides of the lever, and arranged below the fulcrum-point,and a cable doubled to form two portions and located at the gate and linked into the hook of the post and passing under said pulleys, and provided at its ends with hooks for engaging the perforations of the lever, substantially as described.
