IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,447, dated February 6, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, R. A. BOULWARTof Doniphan, in the county of Doniphan \and State of Kansas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Farm-Gates 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a side elevation of my invention. This invention has relation to certain improvements in farm-gates which may be raised to swing over snow or allow small stock to pass under. The gate to which these improvements apply has adjustable diagonal braces to counteract sagging, and is known as patent No. 61,725, issued to John Dickason in the year 1867. A rack is applied to the upper part of the gate, near the hinge-post, and a lever employed for the double purpose of straining the gate and securing the braces to any notch of the rack to which they may be adjusted. My improvement consists in the arrangement ot' a pivoted arm to operate said lever and also the latch.

In the accompanying drawing, A represents the latch-post, and B the hinge-post- C designates the horizontal bars of the gate, and D the end battens, to which the horizontal bars are pivoted. E represents a rack at the top ofthe gate, near the hinge end, and E' represents the diagonal braces or ties, which tend to keep the gate from sagging. A transverse pin through the braces or tie E engages with the teeth of said rack. These braces are pivoted to the lower part of the gate, near the latch end, and are adjustable. A lever, F, pivoted to the hinge end of the gate, is employed to raise and lower it. G designates a double arm, pivoted to the forward part of said lever and also to the horizontally-sliding latch H. It is furnished with handles I, and is designed to serve as a convenient means of raising the lever to let down the gate, and, at the same time, as a means of operating the latch-bar H. J represents a small batten arranged about midway between the ends of the gate. This gate swings on hook-hinges K. The hook L is constructed with a straight shank or hook, gradually curved vertically and laterally, upon which the eye m rests. The shape ot' this hook allows the gate to be raised more easily and to a greater height. The latch-bar slides into a slot in the' gate-post A, a number of slots or recesses being made to receive it at different heights.

I claim as my invention- In a farm-gate having the end battens D, pivoted transverse slats C, oblique-slotted adjustable tie E', rack E, lever F, and latch H, I claim the bar or connection G pivoted to the lever F and to the latch H, and operating as and for the purpose specified.
