'Y etti-aa sans Letters Patent No. 96,7 7 1, dated November 1G, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-GATES.
The Schedule rexerred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE F. BissiLL, of Oneonskilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication.
My object in this invention is to improve and perfeet the farm-gate, various styles of which are in use; and
The invention consist-s in the method ot' operating and supporting the same, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure l represents a side elevation of a gate, operated according to my invention.
Figure 2 is a top view, with the rail broken away, showing the gate open.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This gate is made in the ordinary manner of horizontal rails and vertical slats, supported by means of gate-posts at each end, as is usual.
A is the gate, and
B B' represent the gate-posts.
The gate is supported, on its back end, on a revolving pulley, E, which is attached to one portion 'of a hinge. The other portion of the hinge is securely fastened to the post B.
' G is the portion of the hinge which is screwed or fastened to the post B.
D isthe portion which bears the pulley E.
Attached to the upper portion ot' the post D are horns F F, against which the rail of the gate rest-s.
'lhese horns not only serve to keep the gate on a line with the face ofthe suspemling-pulley E when the gate is opened, but the inner horn catches ,into the staple G when the gate is shoved back for opening, as seen iu fig. 2.
The hinge is formed by eyes I on the part C, and
hooks H H or. thepart l), and it will be seen that the eyes are so formed that when the gate is opened, as seen in'tig. 2, t-lie hooks will dropdown into the recess or cavities seen in iig. 1, and tlnarcby hohl the gate open, as seen in fig. 2.` l
In closing the gate, the hooks slide up the inclined planes, and resume the position seen in fi". 1, when the gate is again closed.
J represents a hook for confining the lower portion or bottom of the gate, inserted diagonally into the part B, with the slioulder bevelled on each side, as seen at la, so as to give a flat surface bearing against the gate-rail, both when the gate is open and when it is closed.
L is a fastening-hook confined by a pivot in the front end ofthe gate, and forms a self-fastening catch when the gate is closed.
The gate rests in the groove of the pulley loosely, and may be detached entirely from the hinge and the posts with the greatest case, or raised, so that the second rail will rest in the pulley in case of adeep snow, another hole in the post being provided for the hook J, and another staple, G, being placedin that. rail, for receiving the horn E.
Having thus fully described my invent-ion,
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Leiters Patent, is-
1. lhe'colnbinaton of staples G on the rails, with horns F, arranged on the post B, in the manner de scribed.
2. The combination of staples G, arranged on that side of the centre nearest to the front thereof, and the horns F with the hinge and post, said parts co-operating to swing the-gateat. right angles to its ordinary direction.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 19th day of' Angust, 1869.
GEORGE F. BISSELL.
