Description
EL al N-PETERS, PHOTO-UTHOGRAPHEH, WASHINGION D C H. HOCKEMEYER, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTT-HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 82,717, dated October 6, 1868.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. HOOKEMEYER, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Butt-Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of butts for hanging doors and for other purposes; and it consists in the use of a loose pivot-pin, whereby the door may be removed from its frame with the greatest facility, and in a device for preventing the removal of the pin or door when the door is closed, as will be hereinafter described.
Figure 1 represents a butt formed according to my invention, the central portion being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a top view.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A A' represent the wings of the butt. B is the pin by which they are connected. The pin is formed with a head, C, and drops loosely into the tubes formed by the central portion of the butt.
It will be evident that when a butt has a loose pin, the pin can readily be raised and removed (on the inside of the room) when the door is closed, unless there is some provision made to prevent it.
Burglars or others might remove a locked door from its frame by taking out the pins from the butts. For the purpose of preventing this I form a collar, d, around the head of the pin, with a projecting lip, e, on the edge of the wing A, which lip projects over the collar, and prevents the pin from being raised except when in one particular position, and this position is when the door is not closed.
As seen in Fig. 2, there are two slots through the collar d, one of which slots, f, incloses the upper edge of the Wing A', so that the wing A and the pin move together. The other win g, A, is seen with the lip e overlapping the collar d, and thereby holding down the pin and preventing its removal.
Fig. 2 represents the Wings in the position they occupy when the door is wide open, A being attached to the door. When the door is partially closed, and the wing A occupies the position seen, it corresponds with the other slot, g, and when thus situated the pin can be raised; but when the door (or win g A) is closed, or in any other position than that seen in the figure, the pin is securely held in place and cannot be removed.
The butt-tube is shortened at one or both ends to accommodate this arrangement, as seen in the drawing.
These butts may be made either cast or wrought, and of any suitable kind of metal.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In combination with a loose-pin butt-hinge, the collar d, the lip c, and the slots j' and g, constructed and arranged substantially as hown anddescribed, for the purposes set orth.
H. HOOKEMEYER.
