Description

- forming part of this specification, in whichclosing, cannot be hoisted off its hinges by hogs or W. WILLARD SOWLES, OF MANLIUS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND A. D. WILCOX, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 88,818, dated April 13, 1869; antedated .Tanna/ry 18,1869.l
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES. ama- The Schedule referred toin these Letters Patent and part of the lame.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, W. WILLARD SoWLns, of Manlins, in the county of Onondaga, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Method of Hanging Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
Fignre'l shows the gate in a closed position, and
Figure 2 shows the position when open,
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
-This invention consists in a certain new and useful improvement in hanging gates, whereby a gate is selfcattle, is easily removed, when desired, and in opening is elevated, so as not to be obstructed by snow, as hereinafter explained.
The lower part of the gate A is provided with a hinge, B, which is formed by a hookfixedin the post C, and an eye-holt in the gate, which engages with said hook. The upper part of the gate is provided with a bolt, or upward projection e, which is secured to the gate in a iixed manner, and engages with a slotted plate, D, which is secured to the post O.
Between the connection e D and the hinge B is a hooked rod, or link F, which also makes connection between thegate and post by means of eye-bolts f a, the eye-bolt f being placed in the post C, not directly above the lower hinge B, but to vone side, as shown in fig 2 When `the gate is opened, the rod or link F checks the upper part of the gate over the bolt e, traversing I the slotted plate D, and sustaining the head of the gate I in connection with said link F, so that its outer end is elevated, as seen in iig. 2, and this not only stores up force to cause the gate to close itself, but raises the bottom of the gate so as toA clear obstructions of ice and snow, which are always asource of greater or less annoyance with close fitting gates, especially the larger class, or farm-gates.
The eye-bolt f is pnt in the post C, so as to be turned therein, and, when desired, the gate is quickly removed, by turning the bolt f Vhalf around and unhooking the link F therefrom, whichallows the hinge B and the upper connection D e to be then disengaged. In this manner the gate is self-closing, and at the same time that it is removable cannot be hoisted by hogs or cat-- tle, and thrown from its hinges.
The gate is'designed as leither door-yard or farmgate.
A detent-notch, (l, iig. 1, in the slottedplate, for
receiving the bolt e, can beused for retaining the gatein a Wde-open position, but where a self-acting detent is not preferred, hooks can be provided for'holding the gate open.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
The combination of the hinge B, link F f, and connection D e, with gate A, constructed and operating substantially as herein set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 9th day of November, 1868.
W. WILLARD soWLEs. Witnesses A. D. Wrncox,- F. A. MORLEY.
