Description

Witnesses N. PETERS. FHDTO-UTHOGRAPHER WASHINGTON D C ,tnited tttre @than detti-rr.
JEROME B. SWEETLAND, OF PONTIO, MICHIGAN.
Letters Patent No. 108,534, dated October 18, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sameA To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that `I, JEROME B. SWEETLAND, of the city of Pontiac, in the county ot Oakland and in the State of -Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Device for Holding Open Doors; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference xnarked thereon, making a part of this specication.
The nature 0f my invention consists in the construction and and arrangement of a device for holding open doors, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the `annexed drawing, in which- Figure lis a side view ot my device, represented as holding a door open, and
Figure 2 is a planaview of the device.
A represents the floor;
B, the door-frame; and
C, the door.
On the door A, at a suitable point, is secured, by`
screws or other suitable means, a plate ornasting, I), provided at or near the end nearest to the wall with an upright post, E, high enough to prevent the door G from swinging over it, thereby acting as a doorburnper, and preventing the door from striking thc wall.
At or near the other end of the plate or casting D are two ears, a a, between which are placed two ears,
b b, projecting fromvthe-nnderside of a pallet or tongue, G, and through all of said ears a pin or bolt, d, is passed, thus pivoting the pallet to the floor-plate.
The ears b b on the pallet or tongue G are placed at such a distance from one end thereof that said end will strike the end ot the plate D when the other end ofthe pallet is raised to a certain height.
In the upper face of the plate D is a recess, and in the under side of the tongue G is a similar recess, as shown in fig. 1.
In these recesses are placed the ends of-a spiral spring, H, which raises the pallet or tongue toaproper angle.
When the door is being opened, itpasses over, pressing down the pallet until it has passed the end thereof, when the spring H raises said pallet, so as to prevent the door from closing without first pressing it down with the foot.
On the side of the door is scc'ureda plate, I, to prevent thc holder from marring the door.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I clain as new, and desire to secure by Let; ters Patent, is-
1. The plate or casting D, provided with post E and ears a a, in combination with the pallet G and spring H, constructed and arranged to operate substantiall as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. In combination with the plate D, post E, pallet G, and spring H, the platel I, attached to the door, for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of September', 1870.
JEROME B. SWEETLAND.
