Letters-Patent No. 70,562, dated November 5, 1867.
IMPROVED BARN-:DOOR GATE-FASTENING.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that we, LORENZO B. HAYES and-WrLLIAM Monats, of Greene, Chenaugo county, New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barn-Door or'Gate-Fastening; and we do hereby declare that the following is atfull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and uselthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-.
Figure 1 isa perspective view o f our` improved fastening.-
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view of the same, taken through thevline a: as, iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding part-s.
Our invention has for its object to furnish an improved fastening for barn-doors, gates, Sac., cheap, durable, and simple in construction, which will fasten the door, both open and shut, automatically, securing it at top and bottom, and which may be adjusted to compensate for the sag of the gate erdoor; and it consists in the com? bination of the vertical bar, having catches attached to it., with the door and frame of the doorway, and in the combination ofthe adjusting-block, having a pin'attached to its edge, and movable collar or band with the vertical bar, thewhole being constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents a barn-door, which is hinged to the post B in the ordinary manner. C is avertical bar, moving freely up and down in keepers, D, attached to the door A. To the upper end of the bar C is attached a springrcatch, E, having its forward end inclined, :1s shown iniig. 2, which, when the door A is swung shut, strikes -against the square staple F attached to the beam G ofthe doorway, raising the bar C so that its lower end may pass above the sill H. Then, as Vthe staple F passes into the notch of the catch E, the lower end 'of the bar C drops into a niortise in the sill II, fastening the door both at top and bottom. I is a catch, attached to the bar C, and passing out through a slot in the door, which, as the door is swung back, catches upon a staple, J. attached to the side of the ba'rn, as shown in dotted lines in iig. 1. 'Ihe projecting end of the catch I also serves as a handle toraise the bar C, and unfasten the door from the outside. K is a block, having a pin, k', attached to its edge, which enters one or the other ofthe holes formed in the edge ofthe bar C for its reception. L is a band or collar, fitting upon the bar C and the tapering upper end of the block K, and-which is held downby its own weight, holding the block K close up against the bar C. But by raising the band or collar L, the lower end ofthe block K may be drawn outward so as to change the pin k from one hole to another, as desired. This construction enables the bar C to bo adjusted to compensate for the sag of thc door, so that the said bar may always be kept in proper position for fastening the door.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv- 1. The combination of the vertical bar C, spring-catch E, and catch I with each other, and with the door or gate A, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. 'lhe combination of the band or colla-r L and block K, having a pin, 7:', attached to its edge, with the bar C, substantially as herein shown and described and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification ot' our invention signed by us this 16th day of April, 186i'.
' LORENZO B. HAYES,
WILLIAM MOR-RIS.
