Be it known that I, JAMES H. OARKEET, .of the city of Montgomery, in the county of Montgomery, .and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Double-Acting Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specicaf tion, n which the ligure is a perspective view, showing Iits dierent parts.

The nature of this invention consists in theemployment of a double-acting hinge, so arranged that it will allow the door or shutter, when closed or open, to assume a parallel position with the frame or partition; and it further consists in the employment of alternating folding plates, acting inconjunction with a hinge, substantially in the manner hereinafter s et forth.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe its construction and operation.

a and b represent metal plates, of suitable dimensions, having curved and slotted pieces on either side, to form a part of the hinge, as seen in the figure, so that a number of joints will be formed, the object of which will be referred to hereafter. c c c designate two or more smaller plates, also curved and slotted in like manner, forming joints with the slots. Said plates are furnished with screw-holes, d d d d, for the purpose of enabling them to be secured in place when desired. The plates w and b, and alternating folding plates c c c, are now hinged together by means of rivets or spindles, e e e e e e, which are inserted in the receptacles of the joints formed on them.

When the door is opened, the joints of hinge, marked f g h, are brought into operation simultaneously, while the joints I J K remain inactive. When the door or shutter changes tothe other side, the joints I J K actsimultaneously, while the joints fg h remain inactive, thus making a greater number of acting joints between the plates a and b than inactive joints on the outer sides of plates and b.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The double-acting but-hinge, constructed and arranged as described.
