Be it known that I, FRANKLIN BALL, of Wilton Junction, in the county of Muscatine, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and improved AWindow-Catch; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Y v Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a window-frame with my improved catch attached thereto.

The nature of my'invention consists of an improvement in that class of Window-catches having a cam placed` in a recess inthe window-easing to bear aga-inst the edge of the sash, by causing the shaft operating said cam 'to work loosely through the same, and combining a lug on the outer end of the shaft with a complementary recess in the plate on the outer face` of the casing, through which the shaft projects.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the window-catch placed in a recess, B, cut in the windowcasing C to receive it. D, a shaft, made square, hexagonal, or of an otherwise angular section, which entends from theouter or frontface of the casing to the catch A, and passes 4loosely through an aperture therein, so formed as to embrace it'closely. E is a. face-plate secured upon the Window-casing, through which the outer end of the shaft projects. The portion of the shaft passing through the-face-plate is rounded, and a lug, F, figs. 1 and 2, is formed or cast thereon, to engage in a notch, G, figs. 1 and 4, cut in the aperture in said plate to receive it. A series of radiating-notches, H, may also be formed upon the`plate, to receive and engage' the inner edge 71. of the button or thumb-piece Kv of the shaft, and secure the shaft'in any given position. v

When the catch is to be turned, its shaft D is drawn out slightly, so that the lug F thereon may turn freely in front of the faeeplatel- By thus turning the shaft, the eccentric is brought to bear liirmly against the edge of the sash o, iig. 3, and by then pushing in" the shaft, and thus causing the lug F to engage with the notch G, the eccentric is kept in its locking position, (illustrated by red lines in iig; 3,)'and the window thus secured against further movement up or down until the eccentric is released. The locking ofthe window istaeilitated hy means of the notch II formed upon the faceplate E. By pushing in the shaft D sufficiently, to enable the lugF to pass'out of the engaging-notch G, it may turn freely back of the plate E; but if pushedi in yetl farther, (as indicated in redlines, hg. 2,) the inner edge of the thumb-piece K may be made to engage with any one of said notches, (see iig. 4,) and thus secure the eccentric against the sash with any degree of pressure.' v i Having thus fully described my invention,what I- claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl l i The combination of notches H H with theAface-'plate and thumb-piece K of a shaft, D, aud catch A of a window-fastener, all substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
