Description
' H. LAMBLER.- Window-Blind.
-No. 210,591. Patented Dec. 10,1878.
MHHHHHHHH/w rrr [l ee-o 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
HENRY L. AMBLER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-BLINDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,591, dated December 10, 1878; application filed October 30, 1878.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. AMBLER, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Blinds 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, referencebein g had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to window-blinds of that class which are formed with verticallyswinging Slat-sections, designed to serve the double purpose of an ordinary shutter and also that of an awning.
The improvement consists in the peculiar construction and adaptation of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, whereby a single metallic rod maintains the Slat-section at any desired adjustment when open, and locks said Slat-section when the same is closed.
It will be observed that my invention differs from other forms of shutter-fastenin g mechanism, among which latter may be mentioned a straight rod hung to the lower transverse body of a horizontally-swingin'g shutter, in combination with a perforated plate secured to the lower sill of the window-frame, the same being adapted to maintain said ordinary shutter in an open position, and also, by engagement of the free extremity of said rod with a staple on the opposite shutter, to secure both said shutters in closed position.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents an isometric view of my invention as applied to an outside shutter. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical ysection ofthe same.
A is the frame of a window-blind, which latter may be either an inside or outside blind. B is the Slat-section, formed separate from the frame, and hinged at its top to the latter, so as to have swinging movement in a vertical plane.
A metallic rod, C, is formed with aright-angular stem, c, by which it is loosely secured to the frame, so as to be capable of swinging through the opening D formed in said frame as the slat-section is adjusted in vertical angular inclination in its use as an awning. The free extremity of this rod is adapted to have end engagement with the side b of the slatsection, which latter is provided with a graded series of holes, b', for this purpose, and in this manner said Slat-section is maintained in desired adjustment as an awning. A catch, d, is fastened to the lower side of the slat-section, with which the free extremity of rod O is adapted to have lateral engagement when the Slat-section is in closed position, and thereby locks the same against liability of its being opened from the outside.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with the verticallyswinging Slat-section, of the metallic rod loosely secured to the shutter-frame vand formed with the right-angular stem, whereby it is adapted to be swung through the frame-opening when the Slat-section is open and maintain the latter in desired angular adjustment, the Slat-section being provided with the catch, adapted by engagement with said rod to lock said section in closed position, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with vertically-swinging Slat-section B, provided with catch d, of metallic rod C, formed with right-angular stem c, by which it is loosely secured to frame A, said rod being adapted to swing through opening D when the Slat-section is used as an awning, and maintain the same in angular adjustment by end engagement with a graded series of holes, b', rod C being further adapted, by lateral engagement with catch d, to lock the Slat-section in closed position, substantially as set forth.
ln testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY L. AMBLER.
