To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, Roi' D. KiNG, a citizen. of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Catches, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to provide a door catch, more especially for screen doors, of a simple, inexpensive and improved construction, which may be readily applied and serve to hold the door tightly closed to prevent its warping or opening under the force of the wind, while at the same time permitting the door to be -opened in the usual way.
Referring to the drawings, which show my improved door catch as I prefer to construct it-Figure 1 is a plan section of a screen door and its jamb, showing my improved catch in place and serving to hold the door closed; Fig. 2, a section on line 2 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, an enlarged sec-tion taken on line 3 in Fig. 2; Fig. 4, an enlarged section taken on line 4 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 5, a section taken on line 5 in Fig. 4.
The reference numeral 6 designates a screen door mounted at its stile 7 upon hinges 8 to swing at its stile 9 and close against a straight edge 10 of the door jamb 11 in a. common manner. On the stile 9 is a door handle 12, and fastened against the stile 9 in the position shown is a keeper 13 for an angular spring loop 14 having a coil and a horizontal arm portion which yields in the upward direction against the resistance of the coil. The keeper 13 is secured in place by a screw 15, and the spring loop may be raised and lowered to adjust it in place and be secured in adjusted position by tightening the screw. Fastened against the jamb of the ldoor in the position shown is a bracket 16, U-shaped in cross-section and held in place by screws 17. The screws 17 have bearing surfaces 18, and shoulders which engage and'bear against the surface of the bracket 16 to hold the latter rigidly in place. Journaled upon the bearing surface 18 of one of the screws is a rotary smooth-edged disk 19 in the path of the catch or spring 14, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
As the door closes the loop portion of the spring strikes against the disk 19 and yields upwardly against the resistance of its coil and springs over the disk to the position shown in Fig. 2, thereby catching and holding .the door tightly closed against the edge 10. A tug upon the handle 12 or great pressure against the door to open it, causes the spring' 14 to rotate the disk 19 and pass over the same against the resistance of the coil of the spring. The resistance of the coil of the spring loop is suiiicient to hold the stile 9 against the edge 10 to prevent such warping of the stile aswould cause it to open far enough to let in flies, or to swing open under the force of the wind. Pivotally mounted on one of the screws 17 at the bearing surface 18 thereof, is a swinging hook-shaped latch 20 which when extending vertically downward, as shown by full lines in Fig. 2, does not interfere with the opening of the door, but which when raised to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 extends into the path of the catch 14 and operates as a lock to engage the catch and prevent opening of the door. Thus, when it is desired to lock the door against being opened from the outside, the latch 2O is swung upward to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, whereby in the initial opening movement of the door the catch 14 in yielding and riding over the disk 19 is engaged by the latch 20 and held against further movement.
The foregoing description is intended to convey a clear understanding of my improvement in what I now believe to be the best form of its embodiment, and no undue limitation should be understood therefrom. It is my intention to claim all that is novel in my invention, and that the claim shall be construed as broadly as t-he prior state of the art may warrant.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A door catch comprising a bearing, a freely rotatable smooth-edged disk mounted on said bearing, a. second bearing, a spring adjustably mounted in said last-mentioned bearing and having its forward end of loopform extending in line with said disk, extend into the path of said loop to prevent whereby such loop portion 1s caused to enithe retraeting of the spring and the opening brace said disk and to bear at its forward of the door.
