J. A. BILL.
SHUTTER BOWER. No. 394,253, Patented Dec. 11, 1888.
g zmmww, 670$ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSHUA ADAM DILL, OF FREDERICK, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES F. KREH, OF SAME PLACE.
SHUTTER-BOWER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 394,253, dated December 11, 1888.
Application filed May 28, 1888. Serial No. 274,835. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSHUA ADAM DILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fredl erick, in the county of Frederick and State of lllaryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shutter Bowers and Locks, l
of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in shutter bowers and locks. "Heretot'ore shutter-bowers have been constructed with a slotted or channeled plate that is attached to the l sill of a window, a bracket that is fastened to i the shutter, and a connecting-rod having one end pivoted to the bracket and the other end provided with a linger-pin adapted to slide in the slotted plate and engage notches in the plate to secure the shutter in a certain position; but great dii'iiculty is experienced in these shutter-bowers, owing to the fact that the connecting-rod can be secured only at the points along the plate that are provided with the notches. Again, sometimes the shutter sags or swells, and it is found that the lock ing-rod will not for this cause engage any of the notches, and hence it is impossible to lock the shutter when closed.
The object of the present invention is to obviate the above objection and to provide a shutter-bower in which the connecting-rod may be secured with great rapidity, convenience, and certainty at any position along the slotted plate attached to the sill.
Furthermore, my invention is designed to lock the shutter when closed, the screw being employed to clamp the rod G and hold the shutter from being opened from the outside. In all the devices employing notches, where only a stated adjustment can be made should ice or snow clog in between the shutter and the jamb, or should the hinge ot' the shutter be loose, allowing the shutter to sag, or should the sh utter swell, the 001111 ecting-rod will be found not to engage in any of the notches, and thus it will. be practically impossible to lock the shutter while this state of things exists. I
In my invention I dispense with notches, and hence can lock the connecting-rod at any point.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of the parts hereinjections I).
after fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective 1 view of a shutter-bower constructed in ac cordance with this invention, showing it ap plied in position. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 50 a:
of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a window-sill, to which is secured a slotted or channeled plate, B, by means of screws that pass through screw -e ves in the pro- The plate b, that is secured to the window-sill A, is provided with a longitudinal slot or channel, 1), extending its entire length. The plate I is preferably constructed of cast metal, and the top 1) projects a slight distance over the groove Z), to prevent a setscrew, 0, having an elongated head, I), being withdrmvn from thelongitudinal slotor channel l).
The set-screw C, which provided with the elongated head U, is inserted through the elongated slot. or channel Z) from the under side of the plate B, and it is adapted to slide back and forth in the elongated slot or channel Z); and to secure it at any point along said slotted or channeled plate B a thumb-knob, D, is provided, which is bored out and internally screw-threaded to engage the screw and clamp it to the said slotted or channeled plate B.
A bracket, E, is secured to the inner face of the shutter F when the latter is closed, and has a depending pivot, c, by means of which a connecting-rod, G, having an eye, g, formed in each of its ends, is pivoted to said bracket E. The other end of the connecting-rod G has an eye or opening, g, through which is passed the set-screw by means of which and the thumb-knob D the end of the connecting-rod G may be secured by simply turning the thumb-knob l) to any point along the slotted or channeled plate B. A washer, H, is used to prevent the wearing and consequent destruction of the connectingrod.
From the foregoing description the construe tion and operation will be readily understood, and it will be obvious that shutter-bowers constructed as described are capable of rapid and convenient adjustment to secure the shutter at any desired position.
I am aware that various devices have been employed to operate shutters, and I therefore Wish it to be understood that I lay no broad claim to any of the features shown in this ap plication, but limit myself to the elements as claimed. The main point claimed in this application is the attachment of the rod G. This rod can be removed from the screw; and, furthermore, as the inner end of this rod is provided with an eye to fit over the screw, the thumb-knob bears on the inner end of said rod and clamps it down upon the plate B. Thus it will be seen that the inner end of the rod G serves the function of a clampingadapted to be secured to a shutter, a slotted or channeled plate, B, designed to be fastened to a window-sill, a set-screw, O, inserted through the elongated slot of the plate B from the under side thereof, and having a head, b fitting Within the plate B, the latter being raised slightly above the sill, so as to allow the travel of the head W, said head being greater in diameter than the width of the slot of the plate, and the connecting-rod G, pivoted to the bracket E, and having an eye, 9', at its inner end, through which eye is passed the set-screw, and the removable thumb-knob D, fitted on the screw 0 and binding against the inner end of the rod G to clamp the latter upon the plate B, whereby the rod G is removable from the plate B and can be clamped at any point thereof, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSHUA ADAM DILL.
